Audi A3 and Audi A6: Audi models push the envelope

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a nice article about how Audi models are pushing the envelope and how less Audi is afraid to take risks.
To be sure, the A3 has all the class and charisma of larger Audis. And with prices that can hit well over $30,000 if lavishly equipped, it isn't exactly your bargain basement compact.
Inside, the A3 shows the usual Audi craftsmanship. Substantial, supportive bucket seats wrap around the shoulders and legs. The instruments, which are illuminated with Audi's trademark red lights, are legible and easily understood. And Audi provides plenty of nighttime illumination, even over the door handles, which are lit by tiny red lights.
The interior on my A3 had tasteful brushed aluminum touches throughout, and the legroom in the rear of the car was surprisingly generous, too.

But driving this car made up for any foibles. It's a powerful, silky, terrific handling auto that feels athletic and far lighter than it actually is. My version had a 255-horsepower, 3.2-liter V-6 that, according to Consumer Reports, has the best overall mileage -- 21 miles per gallon -- of a group of five distinguished sedans it tested.
Engine response is instantaneous. The only fly in the ointment for me was a steering system that was a touch too light and overassisted.
Standard equipment is generous, including four-wheel drive, a knob-operated drive interaction system that controls audio, navigation and other car settings and a full-complement of safety and convenience features.
