VW Golf GT: Fast and frugal

The Telepgraph has a short article about the VW Golf GT with the conclusion "fast and frugal".
Volkswagen will not put the engine-size badge on its new Golf GT for fear that buyers might consider 1.4 litres a bit weedy. Yet this 1.4-litre, supercharged and turbocharged engine pumps out an amazing 167bhp. Neither is it a screamer with poor pulling power, as torque is claimed at a very respectable 177lb ft at 1,750rpm.
Although car makers such as Lancia have used this configuration before, this is the first time that a major production engine has been equipped with both a supercharger and a turbocharger. By clutching the supercharger out at 3,500rpm, the theory is that this small-capacity TSI "Twincharger" engine gives the pulling power and economy benefits of a diesel, with the clean emissions of a petrol.
The Golf GT has a top speed of 136mph, with 0-62mph in 7.9sec and EU Combined fuel consumption of 39.2mpg. It goes on sale in February, but there are no prices yet.
