VW Polo 1.4 TDI: Save a mint
The Belfast Telegraph is telling you how to save a mint: Buy a VW Polo 1.4 TDI!
Since it was first 'minted' some 30 years ago, the Polo has established itself as the posh supermini. The latest facelift and upgrade is designed to see off growing competition from the likes of the Jazz and the new Clio.
The big-car look could well attract people changing down in the face of the £1/litre.
Those living out of town and able to toddle around at a steady 50-55mph on clear roads could do even better. The so-called 'extra-urban' figure is a stunning 69mpg!
Yes, the needle on this petrol gauge can seem to be frozen at times. It would be feasible to squeeze 600 miles from its 10-gallon tank.
In other respects, the Polo is light and easy to drive. The electro-mechanical power steering - another fuel saver - is pleasantly light and precise. The interior is simple and functional but there is that feeling of quality about everything you touch.
While it is not the cheapest compact hatch, the Polo remains one of the best. And with that brilliantly frugal little diesel engine, it has to be on the shopping list of any serious student of economy these days.
