Volkswagen: Stake in Proton manufacturing unit?

VW
Is Volkswagen going to take a 40% share of a manufacturing unit of Proton?
Europe’s biggest carmaker, may take a 40 per cent stake in Proton Holdings Bhd’s manufacturing unit, sources said yesterday.
Last week, Mail Money reported that the board of directors of Proton had met to consider the VW offer.

Proton’s chief operating officer Datuk Kisai Rahmat had previously confirmed the meeting took place, but he ddeclined to comment on what was discussed at the meeting.

Mail Money was told that following the board meeting, the Ministry of Finance was briefed late last week, as well as given a snapshot on the findings of an internal audit done on Proton.

Under the deal being proposed by VW, the German carmaker will take a minority stake in Proton’s manufacturing unit, but it will have firm management control.

The deal, if it goes through, should help Proton introduce new models, using VW’s technical expertise as its base.
