Vorsprung: Visteon making USB for cars

USB
We reported in September that VW is offering an MP3 player integration via USB.
Now Visteon is making the next step and has announced plans to work with car makers in order to get their USB solutions installed 18-20 months ahead of the competition.
CD Autochangers could soon become a thing of the past.

According to Visteon, a major components supplier, USB ports will start to appear on cars in 2006. The idea is that users can connect a memory stick to their in car CD player and have instant access to hundreds of tracks. The clever bit is that the CD player will see the device just like an Autochanger, so drivers will be able to select tracks via their normal audio controls.

For reasons of safety, the USB port will be kept away from the CD player, possibly in the glovebox. No-one wants drivers fiddling with a memory stick while driving down the motorway.
