VW New Beetle: Coming to India?

VW announced to showcase the latest edition of their legendary New Beetle at the upcoming Auto Expo in January 2006.
The bug as this car is popularly known throughout the world has its own cult following in the country and this would surely attract a lot of attention from the visitors to the automotive fair.
Along with the New Beetle, Volkswagen would also be showcasing the Multivan High Line, the SUV Touareg and the two premium sedans Phaeton and Passat at this hugely popular event. Phaeton and Passat are considered to be some of the finest automobiles in the world and the company is doing good by bringing it to the auto fair before they decide on launching them in the Indian market.
Even more interesting is this:
An inside source said about this presentation event: “The display is part of company’s plans to expand its imported car market presence in India. This is independent of the assembly unit plans that the firm is finalizing.”
However, the official word from the company is that there is no current plan of launching this model in the Indian market. However, Volkswagen has confirmed that they intend to get the Passat homologated and start sales in India soon.
