The cars, VW says, are bigger and the shell stiffer than the previous model. More leg, head and shoulder room is also claimed for front and rear passengers and the boot has grown by 72 litres to 527 litres.

Fuel consumption is claimed as 7.4 litres/100km on the combined cycle and the car is available with either five-speed manual or Tiptronic transmission in Comfortline and Trendline specification.
2.0 Comfortline: The two-litre, 85kW Comfortline is, VW says, "for discerning buyers looking for good driveability in a petrol-frugal but sprightly engine" capable of 85kW/5200rpm and 170Nm/2400rpm, 189km/h, 0-100km 11.2sec, general fuel consumption 8.2 litres/100km.
2.0 FSI Sportline: Direct petrol injection gives 110kW/6000rpm and 200Nm/3500rpm for top speed of 211km/h, 0-100km/h in 9.2sec and general fuel consumption of 7.8 litres/100km.
2.0 Turbo FSI: Turbocharging takes the engine's power to 147kW/5100rpm, torque to 280Nm/1800rpm, top speed to 233km/h, 0-100km/h in 7.5sec (7.2 with DSG) and general fuel consumption of around eight litres/100km.
1.9 TDI: This is the smaller turbocharged diesel model, a four-cylinder capable of 77kW/4000rpm and 250Nm/1900rpm, top speed 189km/h and 0-100km in 11.9sec with an average fuel consumption of 5.2 litres/100km/h. DSG gearbox with fractionally faster acceleration (11.8sec) but higher fuel consumption (5.7 litres/100km/h).
2.0TDI Sportline: Considerably more powerful than the 1.9 at 103kW/4000rpm and 320Nm/1750rpm. Top speed 207km/h, 0-100km/h 9.7sec, average fuel consumption 5.5 litres/100km.
The cars will be available from the beginning of March 2006.
