Audi A4 Avant: Rekindles esteem for the wagon

Audi A4 Avant
After checking the Audi A4 Avant this newspaper wonders why "buyers have shifted away from wagons, because the full-bore German driving experience is here in spades".
Occasionally, you have to step back and consider the total package. And when you do so with the A4 Avant, you name it wagon of the year.

A big SUV is out these days for many people, leaving them looking for alternatives that don't include anything close to a minivan. That brings us back to wagons in general, and if you want to use its full name, to the Audi A4 Avant 3.2 quattro AT6 in particular.

Audi's optional $2,750 S-line package raised the A4's fine handling to another level. It tacked on a sport suspension and 18-inch wheels, among other things. We'd very highly recommend the purchase of this package, as it turns the wagon into a first-rate drivers' car.

The inside of the Audi wagon will appeal to anyone who loves to drive: comfortable buckets, easy-to-reach and -read switch gear, all set among high-quality materials expertly assembled. There's virtually no wind noise on the expressway, and only a little tire noise could be heard on coarse pavement.

As a total package, however, the A4 Avant's a thrill to drive and it's made extremely well. In addition, it's one car that you probably won't see coming and going on every block.
