Audi A6, Audi A8: Receiving new 4.2 FSI engine
The Audi A6 and Audi A8 will receive a new V8 4.2 FSI engine from September.
Audi has extended its 4.2-litre FSI direct petrol injection engine to its A6 and A8 models.
The A6 and A8 4.2 FSI models will be available in South Africa from late August or early September. Indicative prices are R575 000 for the A6 (unchanged from the previous model) and R769 000 for the A8, R6 000 up on the previous version.
The direct-injection V8, first seen in the Q7 SUV, produces a claimed 257kW and 6800rpm and 440Nm from 3500rpm compared to the previous 4.2 V8 with conventional fuel-injection which was rated at 246kW and 420Nm.
The extra grunt enables the A6 to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.9sec while the A8 is not far behind at 6.1sec; both are limited to a top speed of 250km/h.
FSI lean-burn technology enables efficient distribution of fuel directly into the cylinders via a high-pressure common-rail injection system; according to Audi, this enables the engines to produce more power while using less fuel.
Audi quotes fuel consumption of 10.9 litres/100km for the A6 and 11.9/100km for the A8 – enough, it says, to extend the their tank range by 60 and 75km respectively.
That's like getting five extra litres of fuel per tankful, free.
