Audi R8: Nominated as "most significant" in Paris

Audi R8
Autoweek titled the Audi R8 as the most significant news in Paris. And they are right! Audi ruled Paris with the Audi R8.
Audi wowed the Paris show crowd with the stunning R8—Ingolstadt’s first production supercar—and in doing so vaulted itself into ranks of the über-elite. The all-aluminum mid-engine design took its name from Audi’s five-time Le Mans winner, despite the fact that the R8 is actually built off the Lamborghini Gallardo platform and not the prototype endurance racer’s.

Don’t discount the R8 for that platform sharing, though. In fact, we dubbed the R8 most significant less for its supercar good looks (and it’s a stunner, especially with its integrated carbon fiber body panels) than for the fact that Audi has demonstrated platform-sharing on a supercar level works—and works without taking anything away from either model.

For one, the R8 sits on a slightly longer wheelbase than the Gallardo’s, and features more wheel travel both front and rear. That should translate into a more comfortable over-the-road ride, which buyers of Audis most likely expect.
