VW Jetta TDI: Saving fuel can be fun

Saving fuel with the VW Jetta TDI is actually fun.
So on the last day, I found out. And in a nutshell, here it is: the Jetta TDI is more fun to drive, cheaper, and more fuel efficient than a Toyota Camry Hybrid. Surprised? So was I.
So what was the Jetta's final mark? Let's just say it's somewhat higher than my first-year chemistry grade. After 400 km of pure flogging in city driving conditions, the TDI swallowed a mere 28 litres of diesel fuel at the pump. That's an even 7.0 litres per 100 km, folks, not far off of the Transport Canada estimate of 6.6 -- a rate of consumption that would be achievable with a lighter right foot.
And that's where the diesel impressed me so much more than the Camry Hybrid: during my time with the Camry, it consumed more fuel than the Jetta -- 7.5 L/100km -- even though it had the advantage of a driver not having nearly as much fun.
