While still brand new, Audi's current grill design was widely criticized; "It's not facial enough." "It's gaudy." "It's not shaped right for American plates." And so on.

Now, taking a second glance at some of the most buzzworthy new cars at this year's Detroit show, I can't help but notice several prominent new grills with shapes similar to Audi's. It could be my eyes. But if the Camry can sport a Bangled butt, the CTS can most definitely don an Audi maw.

What's new?

What isn’t? Audi’s first supercar takes the brand into a whole new part of the market – this is the most radical road-goer to wear four rings since records began.

Based around various components shared with the (Audi-engineered) Lamborghini Gallardo, the R8 uses a mid-mounted, dry-sumped version of the RS4’s 4.2-litre FSI V8 engine to deliver stunning performance: 0-62mph takes a claimed 4.6 seconds and the top speed (unencumbered by one of those pesky 155mph limiters) is reckoned to be a whopping 187mph. Wearing a £76,725 price tag in manual form it’s priced hard against the heartland of the Porsche 911 range – so should you cancel that Carrera 4S?

All things considered, we turned in the keys to our 2007 A3 3.2 tester with much more trepidation than we did just one year ago. The capable and dynamic drivetrain and chassis combination was offered this time around underneath an eye-catching package that makes us seriously reconsider this car if perhaps we weren’t quite so enamored the first time around.

What do we know so far about the Audi A1? Well for one, Audi has confirmed production of the A1 which will start in 2009 with 10,000 vehicles built per year. Second, it will supposedly compete with the Mini Cooper, and now even with the new 2008 BMW 1-Series, with its platform of the Golf V. Third, you can expect to see it at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

When the coupe arrives at U.S. dealerships in April it will carry a base sticker of $34,800, followed by the roadster in May with a base price of $36,800.

Volkswagen AG and their importer in Ireland, Motor Distributors Ltd. (MDL), have agreed to a new arrangement whereby responsibility for the wholesale business for the Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brands in Ireland will transfer to the Volkswagen Group on October 1, 2008. To facilitate this agreement, a new company named “Volkswagen Group Ireland” will be established in July 2007 by MDL into which said import businesses will be transferred.

"For us, this demonstrates a clear commitment to the Irish market, which we plan to develop further in cooperation with MDL and Irish dealers for the benefit of our customers”, emphasized Stefan Jacoby, Volkswagen AG’s Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales for the Volkswagen Group. “The gradual transition means optimum integration of the great know-how of MDL management and employees in the new business.”
