Coupes are less practical than sedans, but sexier. Walter de’Silva, head of Volkswagen Group Design, claims that “The Audi A5 is the most beautiful car I have ever designed.”

You can take him at his word. The S5 attracted a generous sampling of “oohs” and “aahs” from other drivers. In a rich Meteor Gray Pearl Effect paint, with Magma Red interior, I got thumbs up from guys in BMW M3s and Subaru WRXs.

The S5’s 4.2-liter V8 engine puts 354 horsepower to the ground through all four of the car’s 19-inch alloy wheels, good for 5.1 seconds from zero to 60 mph. It emits a sonorous muted growl as it does it – more subtle than a Mustang or a Corvette. Peak torque of 325 pound a foot. comes at 3,500 rpm. I found myself starting in second gear to avoid wheelspin.

The S5 is fast and comfortable, but is also was one of the test cars I would stand and look at after parking. The side detailing, especially along the rear flanks, is simply gorgeous. Of all the cars I drove in 2007, this one stands out.

The new Audi A4 sedan has been available for test driving at Audi dealerships for just a few days now – in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.

“At the time of market launch in the first European countries we already counted 33,000 customer orders,” said Ralph Weyler, Member of the Board of Management at AUDI AG for Marketing and Sales. “The orders received and the impressive response from customers and the media have exceeded all our expectations. From our perspective, this is an extremely positive sign. As our most-sold model, the Audi A4 holds a special significance with respect to our ambitious goals.”

Although the new A4 sedan is just now being launched, it has already won some major awards. The new A4 was honored with the “Golden Steering Wheel” as best midsize car by Bild am Sonntag newspaper, and also received the Auto Trophy 2007 from Auto Zeitung magazine. The sedan outdid its competitors handily in the numerous comparison tests performed by Auto Zeitung and auto motor und sport magazines. In the individual test carried out by auto motor und sport, it achieved the top five-star rating.

The car remains heavily based on the current Golf model, but company bosses are reportedly pushing for production processes to be simplified to make the car much cheaper to build.

However, on-sale prices are unlikely to alter.

Nobody at VW will confirm the car's on-sale date, but sources suggest it is likely to be early 2009.

Three-and five-door models will go on sale initially, with the GTI, cabriolet and eco-friendly Bluemotion variants following.

Four-wheel-drive versions of the car may use the system that was first introduced on the VW Tiguan 4x4.

There will also be a green version, badged 'E'. It will be powered by a 1.9-litre diesel engine and emit 119g/km of carbon dioxide.

Prices of the hatchback and sportback models are expected to start from around £16,000, while the convertible is tipped to cost from £18,500.

Best sports car: 2007 Audi A4 Cabrio

Its outstanding handling via an all-wheel drive system makes it safer to navigate, its hard floptop makes it a great year-round car, and it's loaded with the latest in technology, like Bluetooth capability and a navigation system. Its interior is all Audi-upscale, but on the road, it's fierce, and it features one of the better sound systems on the market.
