Audi says there is a 50-50 chance it will be built. A strong hint for its production came last week at the Geneva motor show, where Audi took the R8 TDI diesel concept from Detroit, painted it red and renamed it the R8 TDI Le Mans–this is the car we drove on Friday in Sebring.
The V12 diesel is ready for production–it will be slipped into Audi’s Q7 SUV. To make the engine fit in the back of the R8, engineers needed to move the firewall forward by six inches. All that’s missing to make this project a go is the new transmission.
Audi estimates that a production version of this concept would get 25 mpg, while still making the run from 0 to 60 mph in less than four seconds and having a top speed of 200 mph.
