VW Golf: There's a lot riding on it...

So there's a fair bit riding on the fate of this Mark VI model. Under the skin it is much the same car. The front-wheel drive, with MacPherson strut front and independent rear suspension, remains and at 100 paces, you'd struggle to spot the differences in appearance. The interior has been completely reworked, however, with better surfacing and a quality worthy of a far more expensive car.

First signs are very good. This is a very refined and uncannily quiet car. The bonnet is double-skinned, the bulkhead has additional insulation and the windscreen is laminated with a sound-deadening layer. The handling is better, too, thanks to a stiffer body and softer suspension.
