Vital statistics: 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6, 176kW/500Nm, six-speed tiptronic gearbox, 6.9L/100km
This is a good engine in the Q7, a great one in the A6, and even better in the A4. There’s a little bit of turbo lag off the line – there’s bound to be a lag-busting twin-turbo version of this engine at some point, we’d hope – but once going there’s a deep well of torque. Economy is very reasonable, too. We averaged 7.6L/100km against the official 6.9L claim, with some fairly spirited driving thrown in to test the dynamic suspension and steering set-up, as well as those steering wheel-mounted flappy paddles. It does feel like a sports car. The aluminium inserts in the cabin give the A4’s interior a classy look and break up the otherwise sombre black.
