VW Scirocco: A blast from the past

VW Scirocco
Nice rewview here of the VW Scirocco, the Eighties style icon which is back in fashion.
And because car trends come and go, it means that perfectly good motors get thrown on the scrapheap of ‘so last year, darling’.

That is what happened with the original Volkswagen Scirocco.

It was the last of the great affordable coupés from the era that gave us the Ford Capri, and although it packed under a hundred horsepower it was light, handled beautifully and looked the business thanks to ultra-Eighties styling from Giorgetto Giugiaro (who designed the DeLorean from Back To The Future).

It was a brilliant blokes’ car. But those went out of fashion as the Eighties ended, partly due to the success of VW’s own Golf GTI, which did the same job in a smaller, more unisex package. So the Scirocco was terminated.

Well, now it’s back, as Volkswagen’s new two-door, front-wheel drive sports coupé, and I can’t tell you how excited I was when this thing arrived in my driveway.
