Audi S4: Spy shots of next-generation

Audi S4
We have some great spy shots of the next-generation Audi S4 for you!
This next-generation Audi S4 could be the super-saloon that ends the German power wars.

Our spies have caught the 2010 S4 undergoing high-speed testing at the Nurburgring and sources suggest that there’s a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 under the bonnet instead of the current model’s V8.

Insiders tell us that Audi wants to reduce the weight and improve the fuel economy of its new S4, while offering performance that’s on a par with the current models.

Audi TT 2.0 TDI, Audi TTS: All you need to know

Audi TT 2.0 TDI, Audi TTS
Here's all you need to know about the Audi TT 2.0 TDI and Audi TTS which are now officially official.
Audi has gone ahead and released all it knows about the two newest versions of the TT. The first is the TTS, the most hotted-up version of Audi's sports car brandishing a 2.0L TFSI (turbo, direct-inject) four-cylinder that produces 272 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It features a magnetic ride adaptive damping system on its suspension, and 0-62 mph takes 5.2 seconds in the just-over 3,000 lbs. coupe thanks to a structure made predominantly from aluminum. An S tronic dual-clutch transmission is optional for snicking through gears quickly without the aid of your left foot, and quattro all-wheel-drive is, of course, standard. For those in Europe, the TTS Coupe starts at €44,900 and the Roadster version will go for €47,750. For us in the U.S., November 2008 is the ETA.

The second iteration of the TT may not be as quick as the TTS, but it's just as exciting. The TT TDI comes with the first application of a diesel engine in Audi's attractive sportster. Said engine is Audi's 2.0L four-cylinder diesel producing 170 hp that's backed by 258 pound-feet of torque. That makes the oil burning Audi good for a 7.5-second run to 62 mph while returning 44.38 mpg on the combined European cycle.

VW Polo BlueMotion: Driving report

VW Polo BlueMotion
Here's a nice driving report of the VW Polo BlueMotion.
Although the interior is another tribute to economy’s charm, the cockpit betrays the car’s size. The cabin feels nearly as roomy and solid as a MKV Rabbit, and just as comfortable. Backseat space is tight, but there is plenty of headroom. Three-tone seats add a playful yet strangely sterile feel, thanks to the incorporation of bright aqua waffle-weave material that vaguely recalls a hospital gown (VW calls this Polo-exclusive interior trim package “Popcorn”). Controls, instruments and accoutrements are similar to North American-market cars, including the familiar blue and red gauge cluster lighting. The cluster includes a fuel consumption readout, enabling BlueMotion drivers to indulge in a bit of self-congratulatory celebration. Safety was not compromised for the purposes of weight reduction; standard features include front and side airbags and ABS with braking assist.

Bugatti Veyron Targa: More information

Bugatti Veyron Targa
Here's some more information about the Bugatti Veyron Targa.
Featuring a removable hard-top roof panel, it will deliver an incredible driving experience thanks to its 987bhp 6.0-litre W16 engine – and all at an amazing price. While the ‘standard’ car costs £840,000, the Targa is likely to be close to £900,000!

Only 80 will be built, against 300 for the coupé. But engineers are said to have decided against a full convertible as the Targa-style opening was the only roof that would fit inside the Veyron’s safety cage.

Even though the hard-top will be removable, there will be no space for it to be stored inside the car. If the heavens open, though, owners can make use of a fabric cover that can be extended to protect the cabin.

To cope with the loss of structural rigidity brought about by the removal of the roof, engineers will reinforce the Veyron’s chassis – a process which is likely to add to the model’s already hefty 1,950kg kerb-weight. As a result, the Targa won’t quite match the performance of the coupé version – the maximum speed will be limited to 217mph.

Audi A1: Great preview

Audi A1
German Autobild is running a great preview of the upcoming Audi A1 which will hit the road in 2009 and is slated to be a Mini-killer.

Here's a short summary:
- it will look differently than the Audi metroproject as its design was disliked internally, because its round shape didn't look sporty enough
- it will look more low and stylish, maybe similar to the Audi Shooting Brake concept
- will be available as 3- and 5-door version
- different roof options will be available which you can fold, open and move. It"s said to be one of the design highlights

Audi A4 Avant 2.0T S-line, Audi A4 Avant 3.2 quattro: Driving report

Audi A4 Avant 2.0T S-line, Audi A4 Avant 3.2 quattro
We found an interesting driving report of the Audi A4 Avant 2.0T S-line and the Audi A4 Avant 3.2 quattro.
Audi’s latest B8-generation Avant benefits from shared design elements with more overtly sensuous S5 coupe. Many cues from the low-slung two-door carry over such as the signature ‘tornado line’ crease in the sheetmetal. This trick bodily fold stretches from the edge of the car’s squinting LED daytime running lights, across the length of the car and carries over part of the taillight.

Inside the lavishness of previous larger offerings from Ingolstadt carries over into the new A4. Audi’s latest level of interior design has been applied to the A4 and material quality continues to impress. The nautical-feel center console bedecked with MMI controls was once only for executive class Audis. An expansive two-paneled glass sunroof with sliding fore panel and power closing rear gate were both first seen in the Q7, now making the options list for the new Avant. There are the aluminum-tracked trunk storage accessories carried over from the latest A6, while the optional Bang & Olufsen audio system uses much of the same components as the S5. Useful equipment such as an optional plug-in socket for adapterless electrical supply, a trunk cargo blind that raises without retracting and a reversible luggage compartment floor with recessed easy-to-clean plastic surface on one side offer a new level of functionality.

VW Tiguan: Miracle engine

VW Tiguan
Here's a nice review of the VW Tiguan, its miracle engine and other secrets. Interesting read!
"There ain't nuthin' that beats cubes!" Right? Wrong - and the 1.4-litre (well, only 1390cc, actually, dearie) VW Tiguan TSI just launched in South Africa proves it. It's a revolution in auto technology as radical as the original BMW M3 and anti-lock brakes.

Here's the basics: The engine in the Tiguan 1.4 TSI is capable of 110kW and 240Nm of torque thanks to its plumbing linking the benefits of supercharging and turbocharging without any of their problems. Amazingly, this is just the baby – there's a racing version that puts out 174kW!

It's the world’s first petrol engine with direct injection and dual charging.

Porsche 911 Turbo Cabrio: The Sportec SP600

Sportec SP600
Sportec has presented a Porsche 911 Turbo based mod, the Sportec SP600.
Chief among these changes is a special Sportec turbocharger and sports-exhaust system which lift output to 600hp when combined with high-performance catalysts and increased air flow to the powertrain. The Sportec engineers have also thrown in a sports-clutch and will personally reprogram each customer’s electronic system to deal with the new adjustments.

All these changes lift horsepower to 600hp and torque to 765Nm available from as low as 3000rpm, giving the Sportec SP600 a rather quick jaunt to 60mph in just 3.3 seconds, a 10.6 second run to 200km/h and a top speed of 338km/h.

As for the bodykit, most of the stuff is optional so if you want to maintain a more discreet appearance you are by all means able to do so. But if you really want everyone to know that you’re not driving around in any ordinary 911 Turbo Cabrio, you can opt for custom 20″ rims, a front spoiler, side-skirts, 3-part rear apron, and a large carbon rear wing.

Audi A5 Sportback: More information

Audi A5 Sportback
We found more information about the rumored Audi A5 Sportback. Check it out!
In addition to the existing Avant estate and Allroad crossover wagon range, the product planners from Ingolstadt are now probing where they can shoehorn in Sportback models - and the A5 is next to receive the sporty wagon treatment.

The A5 Sportback will combine styling elements of the A5, A4 saloon and A4 Avant - wrapped up in a super-sleek roofline, frameless side windows and a big sloping tailgate. Integrated in the hatchback is a motorised extending air deflector, which adds a sporty touch and works wonders for the downforce at 100mph-plus. Perfect for autobahn storming or posing.

A well placed engineer from Ingolstadt told CAR Online: 'With the Avant and the Sportback, we can attack the 3-series Touring and the T-model C-class from two sides. For Audi, this should mean about 50 percent more combined volume, 25 percent higher conquest rates and a 15 percent increase in market share in the segment.'

Production starts in April 2009.

Audi TT; Awesome looking HPA Audi TT FT565 Twin Turbo

HPA Audi TT FT565 Twin Turbo
Have a look at this orange, awesome looking Audi TT FT565 Twin Turbo by HPA. Wow!
Weighing in at about $125,000 of your hard earned cash pile, it offers a very capable and interesting alternative to a pure exotic such as the Lamborghini Gallardo Coupe, costing about $205,000.

You have likely already seen this particular highly modified, neon orange TT featured online and briefly in some of North America's major printed automotive magazines. It is, of course, HPA Motorsports' latest and greatest machine in their storied 18 year history of fabulously fast and famous custom vehicles. Also, this TT was the Gran Turismo Award Winner of "Best in Show" and "Best Import" at last fall's SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

This HPA TT effortlessly blasts from 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds and carries on to a 1/4 mile in 11.7 seconds like clockwork every single time with the help of it's launch control program, and it possesses a 60 to 0 braking prowess measuring an impressive 111 feet.

VW Touareg 2: VW's second crack at SUV segment

VW Touareg 2
Interesting review here of the VW Touareg 2.
The revisions that you will notice immediately include a completely redesigned front end with a new stylized chrome grille on V-6 models with chrome eyebrows. A new front bumper, new side mirrors and sleek, new headlamp housings round out the big changes up front.

Along the sides the visual appeal is spiked with fresh 17-inch alloy wheels standard on the V-6 and V-8 models. The changes continue at the rear with a new roof edge spoiler, LED-style brake lights and new chrome tailpipes.

For almost a decade, VW has been churning out some premium interiors, but you do have to pay the piper to slip into one. No skimping on high-quality materials here as I was treated to beautiful textures and rich luxurious creamy colors punctuated by excellent fit and finish.

The seats improve with better lateral support and flank a console that still looks good if not much different from the previous generation.

Porsche 911: More info on the upcoming facelift

Porsche 911
In case you have missed the leaked details about Porsche's upcoming facelift for the Porsche 911, here is some more information.
The changes coming apply to the 2009 Carrera, Carrera S and their C4 and Targa variants. Look for the 3.6L base engine to get a 20-horse bump to 345 ponies, while Carrera/Targa S models see the 3.8L mill's output jump to a very healthy 385 horsepower. Both engines also get a commensurate increase in torque. The good news is that despite the added muscle, both the 3.6 and 3.8 are expected to consume less fuel and have cleaner emissions numbers.

As we've seen in numerous spy photos, new front and rear bumpers update the fascias. Lighting updates are also on the way, with standard bi-xenon headlights on the base car, plus LED daytime running lamps and LED taillamps across the board. New wheels will hide upgraded brakes, and word is that the Carrera 4 models will get additional cues that visually set them apart from the 2-wheel-drive cars. Inside, a new steering wheel tags along with the Doppelkupplung, and drivers can expect a freshened instrument panel boasting simplified controls and a host of improvements to the multimedia and nav system offerings. All the changes will be officially revealed/confirmed in June.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S: The 550 bhp SUV

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S
Nice review here of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, the most powerful Cayenne ever!
The Cayenne Turbo S puts the hammer down, providing an additional 50 horsepower and a whopping 88 lb-ft of torque, and has fattened that torque curve in many areas to provide brutal, Mercedes-smiting acceleration. The gains were made thanks to a reprogrammed ECU and a new sport exhaust system with better airflow. Porsche says that the Turbo S can accelerate to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, down from 5.1 seconds with the regular Turbo, and will continue to accelerate until 174 mph is reached, 3 mph higher than the standard SUV. And these upgrades come at no cost to fuel economy.

Audi S3 Sportback: Finally coming!

Audi S3 Sportback
Audi has listened to the cries of the Audi enthusiasts and has finally released the Audi S3 Sportback. Fantastic car!
The dynamic range-topping member of the A3 family sports new features, too. There is now a second top model on the market, with the S3 Sportback joining the three-door Audi S3. Both versions are equipped with the same engine, the reengineered 2.0 TFSI with an output of 195 kW (265 hp). With 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque available constantly from 2,500 to 5,000 rpm, the direct-injection, two-liter turbo catapults the three-door model from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.7 seconds (Sportback: 5.8 seconds); the top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h (155.34 mph). Yet the S3's fuel consumption is astonishingly low, at an average of 8.5 liters per 100 km (27.67 mpg).

A six-speed manual transmission handles the business of getting the power from the engine to the standard quattro driveline; 18-inch wheels provide a firm grip with the road. The sport suspension holds the body 25 millimeters (0.98 in) lower and integrates lightweight aluminum components. Black brake calipers act on 17-inch disk brakes. Audi's compact premium sports model offers the reflexes of a top athlete. It reacts spontaneously to steering movements and its handling remains stable, precise and almost neutral right up to its physical limits. When coming out of a bend it veritably seems to dig its claws into the tarmac, enabling the driver to start accelerating again at the earliest possible moment.

Like the A3, the S3 has been optically modified and is clearly distinguished by a number of striking lines, for example on the radiator grille, on the bumpers and on the roof spoiler, as well as by the aluminum-look exterior mirrors. Inside, the driver and front passenger are greeted by sport seats with cloth, Alcantara/leather or all-leather upholstery; Audi exclusive bucket seats are available as an option. Aluminum pedals, three different styles of inlay and a black or silver headlining create an exclusively sporty look. Deluxe automatic air conditioning, an anti-theft alarm and xenon plus headlamps with LED daytime running light extend the range of standard features.

The further optimized Audi A3, A3 Sportback and the two S3 versions are about to go on the market; shipping of the new models will begin in the summer. In conclusion, the comprehensively improved A3 comes with an extended range of standard equipment, including the chorus radio system – all at a starting price of € 20,350.

Audi A3: All the details about the facelift

Audi A3
Here are the all the details you need to know about the facelift of the Audi A3.
# Innovative high-tech concepts in the 2009 model year
# Expressive exterior design, elegantly sporty interior
# S tronic transmission, Audi magnetic ride and efficient engines
# Highlight: S3 now also as Sportback

The Audi A3 and A3 Sportback, the premium compact models from Audi, are raising their sporty profile with a raft of improvements and an accentuated design. Innovative technologies such as the S tronic dual-clutch transmission with seven speeds and Audi magnetic ride, the suspension control system, makes for even greater driving pleasure. Its sharper, more striking design lends even greater expression to the A3 family. Additional equipment features, such as the Audi parking system at front and rear, the parking assistant and the reversible loadliner, also add to the appeal of these models. The Audi S3 developing 195 kW (265 hp) is now also available as a Sportback version, a new top model that rounds off the range. Shipping will commence in the summer, with prices starting at € 20,350.

The Audi A3 created the entirely new market segment of the premium compact car when the first-generation model made its debut in 1996. The brand with the four rings has been notably successful in that market segment and has since built 1.9 million units of the Audi A3. After four successive record-breaking years, the one millionth specimen of the second-generation A3 – which went into production in 2003 – left the assembly line just a few days ago. Audi is now solidifying its lead.

Audi S4, Audi A6: First details of new supercharged 3.0T engine emerge

Audi S4
German Auto Motor und Sport has the latest news that Audi will feature a supercharged 3.0T engine in the new Audi S4, upcoming Audi A6 and most probably Audi Q5 and Audi Q7 as well. A must read!
As expected at the Vienna Motor Symposium, Audi announced plans to introduce a new supercharged V6 engine. It is intended first for the refreshed A6 and also for the next-generation S4.

The previous S4 made us of a powerful 344-hp normally aspirated 4.2 V8. This new engine will be used in Europe and North America and will be good for 350 hp in the S4.

Despite similar levels of power to the old V8, the new V6 consumes significantly less fuel. It will be combined with a sports differential from Magna, which will also later be used in Q5 and S5 models.

The new Audi S4 is expected shortly after the A6 this autumn. For the A6, the new supercharged V6 engine will be implemented at the same time as a new facelift and will produce 290 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque in the A6 application.

Audi TTS: Official car of the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy

Audi TTS
Awesome news here, the Audi TTS is the official car of the 2008 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy race!
• The only road car to share the TT name gets official course duty
• Stunning Audi TTS Chosen As Official Car for 2008 Tourist Trophy (TT) Motorcycle Event
• John Reynolds supports TT organisers’ decision to select Audi’s sportscar as Official Car

Former triple British Super Bike Champion John Reynolds has backed the organisers of the Isle of Man TT races who have chosen the latest and most powerful model in the iconic Audi TT range to perform as the “Official Car” at this year’s world-famous event.

The new 272PS Audi TTS is the most extreme production TT to date and Reynolds believes it will make a fittingly dynamic debut in Britain at the famous Tourist Trophy motorcycle races which run from 24 May - 6 June.

Reynolds has not only contested the TT races but also has years of experience in driving the Audi TT coupe. The Nottinghamshire bike ace will be back spectating on the Isle of Man this year and says the organisers have made an excellent decision.

“Having driven an Audi TT for many years on the road and indeed on many race tracks around the world, I believe the TT race organisers have made an ideal choice,” confirms Reynolds. “It will be totally suited for that job on those roads – it’s fast and handles well. I completed many happy miles in my TT – I loved it to bits. It had the looks and the speed and road holding – a great all round performer.”

Audi paid homage to the legendary Tourist Trophy motorsport event of the same name in naming its “TT” sportscar – an event in which machines from one of its founding companies competed with considerable success – and which saw the spectacular Tourist Trophy car race initially staged on the Isle of Man in 1905.

Peter Duffy, Audi UK’s Head of Marketing, commented: “Having been supporters of the British Super Bike championship in recent years, we’re now delighted to be associated with the Isle of Man TT races and to be able to play an active part in this world famous event.

“The Isle of Man held the very first Tourist Trophy event in Britain in 1905 and became an integral part of Audi’s heritage in its days with NSU. We look forward to writing the next chapter in our company’s history with the public showing of the new Audi TTS on the island.”

Volkswagen unveiled the production version of its Blue TDI, the advanced "clean" turbodiesel that will debut this summer in the 2009 Jetta.

VW said the Blue TDI for North America is based on the next-generation TDI engine that was introduced last year in Europe on the new Tiguan. For the U.S., the engine receives a NOx trap, as well as internal modifications to help reduce emissions.

Volkswagen: US factory location narrowed down to Alabama, Michigan, and Tennessee

Stefan Jacoby
If Volkswagen will build a factory in the US, it will be placed somewhere in Alabama, Michigan or Tennessee. These choices have been narrowed down so far.
VW group of America president Stefan Jacoby (pictured) said on Wednesday that the list of potential locations had been narrowed to Alabama, Michigan, and Tennessee. “We reviewed many excellent sites and the process to narrow down the locations was not an easy one,” said Jacoby.

Jacoby went on to say that the company was evaluating things like site readiness, logistics, and of course cost, as it continues to mull over the U.S. facility. VW has said that the strengthening price of the euro is what’s ultimately driving its move, with the currency’s strength against the U.S. dollar making America a logical target for production.

Porsche 911: Details about 2009 models leaked

Porsche 911
A bunch of details about the 2009 Porsche 911 line-up has been leaked, most importantly a direct injection has been confirmed!
Recently, Porsche documents have been leaked via internet that seem to confirm many of our suspicions about the 2009 911. Here's what we know so far, according to the leaked product information:

* The 2009 Porsche 911 will feature direct injection which will bump horsepower to 345 in the 3.6-liter engine (up 20 horses) and 385 in the 3.8-liter 'S'-spec engine (up 30 horses) in European spec. Both engines also benefit from an increase of 15 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the revised engines will conform to the new EU5 European emissions regulations set to be enforced in the near future.
* Porsche's Doppelkupplung (PDK) seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission will also find its way to production in the 2009 911 (Porsche's version of DSG). A Sport Chrono Package Plus will be available in conjunction with the gearbox and will feature launch control, a racetrack gearshift strategy program, and an additional "Sport Plus" button - though we're not informed of its purpose.
* The 911 will be getting a subtle facelift in the form of a revised front bumper with larger air intakes, LED taillights and a revised rear bumper, restyled and separate parking lights to be located above the front air intakes, new stainless steel exhaust tips, larger exterior mirrors, and Bi-Xenon headlights will be standard on all 911 models.
* The larger brakes from the Carrera S will be fitted as standard to the base model as well, and the standard 18-inch wheels will be restyled. Inside, a new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system will make its debut with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display.

We drive the key cars from the past six decades, spend a day with Derek Bell testing the hardcore cars and interview the people who make the company tick. For our cover story, we gathered four of the marque's supercars - and you can watch them in action in our video below:

• 959 (1987)
• 911 Turbo (1989)
• Carrera GT (2004)
• 911 GT2 (2008)

Our short film gives you a sneak look behind the scenes at the CAR photoshoot in an empty industrial warehouse. Photographers Mark Fagelson and Gus Gregory are snapping in the background, while road test editor Chris Chilton introduces the cars.

Gumpert Apollo Hybrid: Racing at Nürburgring 24-hour race

Gumpert Apollo Hybrid
As a regular reader you know how much we like the Gumpert Apollo, therefore we are really excited that a Gumpert Apollo Hybrid will participate at the 24h race at the Nürburgring. Awesome!
The Gumpart Apollo is one mean machine with its twin-turbo 4.2-liter Audi V8. But for next month's 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring, Gumpert will be swapping out that powertrain for something a bit more green. Since fuel economy is a key factor in a long race, the Apollo racer will be fitted with hybrid running gear.

The new motor is a 3.3-liter V8 fitted with twin turbos. Combined with a 100kW electric motor, the car has 630 HP readily available. The juice for the electric motor is charged up by regenerative braking technology.

Audi A4 Avant: First steering report

Audi A4 Avant
We found another first drive report of the Audi A4 Avant. Interesting read!
Inside, the lavishness of larger Audis carries over into the new A4. Center-console controls for the navigation and audio system, for example, have filtered down from the A8 to cars that we proles can afford. An expansive two-paneled glass sunroof with a sliding fore panel and a power closing rear gate are optional. Aluminum-tracked trunk storage accessories carry over from the latest A6, while the optional Bang & Olufsen audio system uses much of the same components seen and heard in the S5. Useful features such as an optional high-voltage socket and a reversible luggage compartment floor with a recessed, easy-to-clean plastic surface on one side offer added functionality.

Part of the first generation of A4s to employ Audi's modular longitudinal platform (MLP), the Avant grows significantly in size compared with its forbears. It's both longer (by 4.6 inches) and wider (by 2.1 inches) than the outgoing A4, but it's also lower (by 0.7 inches) and lighter, which helps to make it more fuel-efficient. The A4 is also larger than key competitors like the BMW 3-series.

VW Jetta SportWagen: Driving report

VW Jetta SportWagen
Interesting driving report here of the VW Jetta SportWagen. Enjoy!
Thirty minutes ago I was hustling a car through the rolling, glass-smooth two-lanes of Virginia's horse country, my hands happily clasped to a thick, three-spoke steering wheel as I arced the front tires through kinks and bends and wriggles, my feet playing the three pedals as if I were summoning bass notes on a pipe organ, my right hand jumping to the five-speed manual lever to choose shifts up and down, suspension beneath me deftly deflecting road bumps while keeping all four corners locked down and obedient. I was having fun.

I was not driving a Porsche, though. My grins appeared from the helm of a station wagon.

VW City Golf: Review

VW City Golf
Here's a nice review of the Canadian VW City Golf.
In terms of styling, the Golf enjoyed a steady evolution since 1999, combining both classic and modern cues. The econo box turned hot hatch appeals to a lot of folks with its rounded lines and masculine look. Yet, at the same time, it proves cute enough to stand out from more "macho" competitors. Headlights and taillights are now bigger than ever. With flared fenders on top of that, you get the impression that the Golf has grown corpulent. It has more presence and more flair, particularly with those vivid colors. Exterior build quality and paint finish are good.

Bugatti Veyron: First copy sold in China for $3.6m

Bugatti Veyron
The very first copy of a Bugatti Veyron, the one which Bugatti brought to the Beijing Motor Show, has been sold to a Chinese customer for $3.6m. Maybe somebody should have told him that he can get the same car everywhere else for "just" 30% of that ...
The customer will fly to Bugatti's Molsheim headquarters to pick out the color scheme and options (apparently no one told him he could do it online), and pay a whopping 25 million yuan (approximately $3.6 million, more than twice the sticker price) for the privilege of owning the first Veyron in China. Mao who?

Audi Q5: First look

Audi Q5
Just in case you have completely missed the Audi Q5 so far, here's all you need to know.
This is the Audi Q5, the company’s long-awaited rival for the BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander. Unveiled at the Beijing motor show today, the Q5 is one of a blitz of new Audi models due over the next four years. It will arrive in the UK at the very end of 2008, priced from just under £30,000.

Audi is pitching the five-seat Q5 as the sportiest SUV in its class and it will be available with three engines, one petrol and two diesels. The firm’s quattro all-wheel drive system will be standard on all models. Climate control is also standard, and the list of optional extras is long.

Based on the same MLP modular chassis as the A4 and A5, the Q5 is a handy 4.6m long and just 1.65m high. As these pictures show, it’s a more compact and modest machine than the bombastic Q7, a timely move by Audi considering the environmental pressure currently being applied to SUVs.

The Q5 styling is neat but less aggressive than the Q7, although the treatment of the aluminium tailgate (the bonnet is also aluminium) is original. Audi says the Q5 has a creditable Cd of 0.33 and that the car has the longest wheelbase (2.8m) in its class.

Audi A3: How the next-generation might look like

Audi A3
Another artist's impression on how the next generation Audi A3 might look like. Happy times for all photochoppers with Audi's product avalanche in the next few years.
I'm talking about the slightly curved side line, the new side skirt emboss (see A5 and new A4), or the mirrors à la TT. I'd also like to see some different front lights on the A3. The ones used on the larger models are too similar in my opinion. I didn't break the connection with the past; I went for an evolution of the traditional A3 lights with a little more anger and only a touch of high-tech.

VW Eos 2.0T: Review

VW Eos 2.0T
Here's a nice review of the VW Eos 2.0T.
The dashboard layout is pleasing to the eye, the gauges are easy to read, and the controls not only fall readily to hand, but are of the superior quality we have come to expect from the VW group.

The seats are extremely comfortable and are of a design that suits the slightly luxurious, slightly sporty feel of the vehicle. Interior storage space is not exactly outstanding in the EOS, the owners manual takes up more than its fair share of room in the glove box, and the center console is smaller than most. However, large door pockets help to make up for this, and compared to some other convertibles, it is quite good really.

It is hard not to like the interior of the EOS. In fact, I'd say that it is one of the nicest in its class. Mind you, I think that you kind of expect to find a nice interior in a cute little convertible.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S: More details about the 542bhp monster

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S
Here are more details about the 542bhp Porsche Cayenne Turbo S which was launched during the Beijing Motor Show.
This is the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, just unveiled at the Beijing motor show. With a headline-making 542bhp to call upon, it’s capable of cracking 62mph in under five seconds and going on to a maximum 174mph – incredible figures for any two-and-a-half tonne SUV.

The last Cayenne Turbo S had a piffling 514bhp; this one trumps even a 911 GT2 for power, and gets 37 extra pounds feet of torque than the current Cayenne Turbo too, with 553lb ft of the stuff between 2250- and 4500rpm. Porsche has turned to a modified exhaust system and ECU to produce that extra shove.

Officially, the car hits 62mph in just 4.8sec. Weissach has yet to announce a 0-100mph figure, but expect it to be in the region of 12.0sec.

Lamborghini Gallardo: Body kit launched by Premier4509

Lamborghini Gallardo
We don't who who needs a body kit for the Lamborghini Gallardo, but in case you are looking for one: Japanese tuning company Premier4509 has something for you.

The front end clearly draws its inspiration from the Lamborghini Reventon. The parts are all made of carbon fiber, which, as Premier4509 points out, has been laboriously hand-stitched together because some panels are actually wider than the sheets in which the material comes.

Audi RS6 Avant: Reviewed!

Audi RS6 Avant
We found a very nice review of the new Audi RS6 Avant including some really nice photography. Make sure to check it out!
Back in 1986, AMG unleashed an E-class with a 360bhp 5.6-litre V8. They called it ‘The Hammer’. Great name, great car. The new RS6 needs a name like that. Its twin-turbo 5-litre V10 has 572bhp and 479lb ft, and if it weren’t for a spoilsport electronic limiter it would crack 200mph with relative ease, passing 62mph in 4.6sec and 124mph in 14.9sec along the way. Let’s just call it The Sledgehammer.

The engine is simply wonderful, almost absurdly powerful.

VW Passat CC: Luxury on the cheap

VW Passat CC
Catchy headline, right? And while we wouldn't call the VW Passat CC cheap in any sense, this source is explaining the title.
If you thought the VW Passat saloon was just a bit, well, worthy, then the new Passat CC is a stylish and luxurious alternative.

When it comes to driving pleasure, however, I found the cheapest Passat CC, the 1.8-litre petrol, the most enjoyable of the lot. It felt lighter in every way, the new engine was smooth and very willing and it never seemed like a slow car. A top speed of 138mph cannot be regarded as remotely inadequate, surely? VW's four-cylinder engines, petrol or diesel, are all excellent now.

VW: World premiere of new Park Assist Vision

VW Park Assist Vision
VW has premiered a new parking assist called Park Assist Vision which can also park into a perpendicular parking space.
There is something decidedly fantastical about this scene: We observe the approach of a Passat estate, it stops, the driver gets out, slams the door shut and, as he walks away from the car, he aims a remote control back at it. That car now proceeds to reverse park itself into the available space, it then independently cuts the engine and activates the door locks. End of performance. In reality, there is nothing at all fantastical about this demonstration. The live performance by Volkswagen can be viewed at this year’s Hanover Fair (21 to 25 April), where the carmaker is premiering its “Park Assist Vision”, a system with the ability to guide a Passat prototype with absolute precision into a perpendicular parking space, i.e. the kind available on parking lots and in underground car parks. These parking spaces are often too narrow to allow drivers and passengers to get in and out of the car comfortably. In the not too distant future, “Park Assist Vision” will put an end to that.

Having already launched a semi-automatic park-steering system, the “Park Assist”, in its Touran, Tiguan, Passat and Passat estate to help drivers parallel park, Volkswagen is now presenting a concept system at the Hanover Fair which is capable of perpendicular parking – and of doing so fully automatically. The only thing the driver needs to do is select an available space on the monitor of the navigation system, set the selection lever of the automatic-drive vehicle (DSG) to “P” and alight from the car. The driver can, of course, choose to stay in the vehicle until the vehicle has been manoeuvred into its space.

Bentley Arnage: Spy shots of Rolls-Royce Phantom killer

Bentley Arnage
A new flagship model of the Bentley Arnage has been caught testing and it's said to be a Rolls-Royce Phantom killer.
Look closely at the centre of the car, and you can clearly see the B-pillar has been widened – an indication that the wheelbase has grown.

The increased length will ensure the new range-topper provides limousine levels of space inside. And for the first time ever, bosses are considering the possibility of using a diesel in the Arnage. Bentley’s parent company Audi has a rich heritage of oil-burners, so the options would include the V12 TDI fitted to the Audi R8.

In addition, rumour has it that the W16 engine from the Bugatti Veyron supercar is also under consideration for the big Bentley.

Expect prices for the new Arnage to start from around £180,000, and rise to in excess of £200,000 for the W16-engined Arnage T version.

Lamborghini Reventon: Test drive report

Lamborghini Reventon
Test drive reports with the Lamborghini Reventon are rare, so make sure not to miss this one.
I’m pulling a three-point turn on a rural Italian road and rearward visibility is sparse, to say the least. The exhaust note of the thirsty V12 reverberates through the cabin, and I’m praying to dear God that an overzealous Fiat Punto isn’t about to roar around the bend and T-bone my test car. You see, I’m behind the wheel of a prototype of the Lamborghini Reventón, number 0 of 20. All 20 units have been pre-sold for a stunning $1.4 million each, but since I’m driving the only one in existence, it may as well be priceless.

The Pirelli tires kiss the edge of the shoulder as I merge onto the road, and my Lambo lurches ahead as premium fuel hits the 12 screaming cylinders on display beneath louvered glass. Three-point turns aren’t usually associated with a seven-figure sports car, but then again, maneuvering a Reventón safely at low speeds is as crucial as making sure you don’t spin out at 120 mph. Welcome to supercar reality.

Bugatti Veyron: 7 pages of Auto Erotic

Bugatti Veyron
The Men's Vogue has a great piece about the Bugatti Veyron and why it's pure auto erotic. They even have a video. Make sure to check it out, interesting read!
Trees. Sun. Bridge. House. Guardrail. The Sicilian piedmont blurs in one long incomprehensible gout of liquid reality...treesunbridgehouseguardrail... The Bugatti Veyron bellows at 205 mph down the island's main autostrada. A deep aortic throb registers between my shoulder blades. I haven't blinked for, like, 10 minutes — I'm Keir Dullea in 2001. The truth is, I've driven this fast before, but never in a street car, never on a public road, and absolutely never on a cracked, sun-buckled hunk of weaving motorway like this. If I crash, the Sicilian highway department can expect a very strongly worded letter from me.

In the passenger seat, the Veyron's chief engineer, Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, natters on about the supernumerary challenges involved in building this $1.7 million supercar, officially the fastest production automobile in the world: the 12 radiators, the 16 cylinders, the four turbos, the 1,000-plus horsepower, the seven-speed double-clutch transmission, the endless calculations and aerodynamic refinements that keep this beautiful, wind-glossed capsule from flitting off the road in a fit of turbulence. I mention that it is quite amazing that two people can even converse in a car that's blitzing the atmosphere at 200-plus mph, kind of like having cocktails in the middle of a cyclone. "We worked very hard on cabin noise," says Herr Schreiber, plainly glad I've noticed. Then, looking at the pockmarked road ahead, he says, "Here, now is the time for maximum speed."

Audi RS4: Screaming cool!

Audi RS4
Nice review here of the screaming cool Audi RS4.
It was hard to imagine the diminutive Audi RS4 I was approaching had 20 more horsepower than the original Dodge Viper I tested for Chrysler back in the mid 1990s, but it was true.

More than a mere sports car, the RS4 is Audi's answer to the question only the rich should ask: How much power can you get out of an A4 sedan?

In this case, 420 horsepower is the answer, and it doesn't come cheap.

As I walked toward the "Phantom Black Pearl"-colored sedan, I was immediately struck by how this awesome vehicle might be overlooked by the novice autophile.

Yes, I did get some heads turning during my test week, but only a few noticed this wolf in sheep's clothing. The RS4 sports bulging fender flares with RS badging, rear-deck spoiler, 19-inch titanium alloy wheels and side mirrors, black-out windows and front and rear grilles - and the topper, super-cool titanium-color dual oval exhaust outlets.

VW Polo, VW space up!: Consideration for US confirmed

VW Polo, VW space up!
Volkswagen of America CEO Stefan Jacoby has re-confirmed that VW is considering to the bring the VW Polo and the VW space up! to the US.
Volkswagen of America CEO Stefan Jacoby has reiterated the possibility of the Polo hatchback coming to the United States, characterizing it as "very interesting." The comment comes less than a month after Volkswagen AG CEO Martin Winterkorn discussed the same idea. Jacoby said other small vehicles might also be imported.

The new bound-for-the-U.S. models would use Volkswagen's 1.4L turbo four-cylinder powerplant and sticker for about $13,000.

"Small cars like the Polo could be very, very interesting," Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, told Automotive News. VW has already indicated that the U.S. would receive a model based on the Space Up concept that first debuted at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show.

VW is also reportedly considering a small crossover that would combine the features of an SUV and a van.

Jacoby said the vehicles would be offered at a price point between $13,000 and $14,000, but not below that target. "We are not a cheap make in this market," Jacoby said. "[VW vehicles] will not start at $9,000 or $10,000." Volkswagen vehicles generally command a 10% to 20% premium over similar vehicles in the market.

However, Jacoby told Automotive News that turbocharged engines still have some hurdles to overcome in the U.S. "Turbocharging is not easy to market. The U.S. customer thinks it is expensive; it is not reliable," he said. But Jacoby is confident that turbocharged engine will become a trend in the industry, especially with stricter CAFE standards on the horizon. "It is the future," he said.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S: Most powerful Cayenne ever unveiled at Beijing Motor Show

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S
The most powerful Cayenne ever, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, has been unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show.
Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has extended its third model line by the addition of the top of the range Cayenne Turbo S. The Turbo S, the most powerful Cayenne of them all, is driven by a 4.8 liter V8 engine with twin turbo forced induction, delivering 550 hp (404 kW).

The Turbo S is Porsche's response to the wishes of its customers. There is huge demand, especially in the new emerging markets of Eastern Europe and Asia, for exclusive sports-style SUVs with top quality physical handling dynamics. Despite the fact that Porsche has managed to give the new Turbo S even better drive performance than the regular Turbo model (500 hp / 368 kW), the fuel efficiency figures for the Turbo S are exactly the same as those for the Cayenne Turbo (as per the calculation methods stipulated under the New European Operating Cycle – NEFZ).

From the outside, the Turbo S can be recognized by its 21 inch SportPlus alloy wheels housed within its painted wheel arches and by a sports exhaust system with four tail pipes made from aluminum investment casting. The air intake grills and wheel arches are painted the same color as the car body. The new understated yet elegant "lava gray metallic" paint option is exclusive to the Turbo S.

Audi Q5: Unveiled at the Auto China in Beijing

Audi Q5
Finally the Audi Q5 has been unveiled at the Auto China in Beijing. What an awesome looking SUV!
# The performance SUV from Audi raises the bar
# Innovative technologies for dynamic driving excitement
# Spacious interior with a myriad of intelligent functions

The new Audi Q5 combines the dynamism of a sports sedan with highly variable interior and versatile options for leisure-time and family use. Strong and efficient engines, quattro permanent all-wheel drive and agile running gear have been brought together to create a superior technology package for both on- and off-road driving. The sportiest SUV in its class is dynamic, multifunctional and comfortable.

The dimensions alone indicate that this is a SUV of all-new proportions. Measuring 4.63 meters (15.19 feet) long and 1.88 meters (6.17 feet) wide, the Audi Q5 is just 1.65 meters (5.41 feet) high - making it sportier than any of its competitors. What's more, this SUV sets another benchmark in its class with a low drag coefficient of 0.33.

With its sporty elegance and artfully sculpted forms, the design of the Audi Q5 is perfectly in tune with the character of Audi as a brand. The front end is dominated by expressive headlights on both sides of the large single-frame grille; on request, they can be outfitted with bi-xenon lamps and LED daytime running lights. Viewed from the side, the large wheels and rising edges are especially prominent features.

Crowned by a railing, the elegant slope of the roof underscores the slim, coupe-like styling. At the rear, the wraparound tailgate - made from aluminum just like the hood - clearly identifies this SUV as a relative of its older brother, the Audi Q7. The taillights come with eye-catching LED technology as well, which will be standard in the USA.

Audi S8: 5.2-liter V10 nominated as International Engine of the Year

Audi S8
The 5.2 V10 engine from the Audi S8 has been nominated as International Engine of the Year. Go for it!
The "International Engine of the Year Award" is a big deal as far as bragging rights go in this industry. Think of it like the Academy Awards for engines. However, instead of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voting, you have 62 renowned motoring journalists, from 30 countries, casting ballots for their favorite fossil fuel burner.

Let's sit back and listen to the orchestra for a bit... the winners don't get announced until May 7, at Engine Expo 2008, in Stuttgart, Germany.

VW up!
AutoExpress claims to have the details how the VW up! will look like when it hits the road in 2010.
Thanks to our sources within the company, Auto Express can give you the best look yet at the striking city runabout. It’s scheduled to make its debut in UK showrooms in 2010, and will compete with an emerging army of chic, eco-friendly small cars such as the Fiat 500 and all-new Toyota iQ.

As you can see from our images – produced using exclusive insider information – the final showroom version will maintain all the cheekiness and stand-out style of the concept. And that’s no surprise; bosses at VW have always made it clear that the production up! would look virtually identical to the model seen on the stands at Frankfurt.

VW Passat CC: Driving report

VW Passat CC
We found one more driving report of the VW Passat CC. Enjoy!
"Was ist das? Der neue Passat?"

We got that question more than a few times when we drove Volkswagen's new Passat CC in Germany and Austria, and it is a good one. The Passat CC appears to be merely a better-looking replacement for the existing Passat but is in fact an entirely new model designed to slot above the current, more conservatively styled sedan. Naming issues aside, the Passat CC has far more going for it than a pretty, cut-down body. Underneath is a raft of changes — new technologies and improved chassis dynamics — that provide a far superior driving experience to the Passat sedan, making this car a bit more special than we first expected.

Porsche: Soon assembling cars in Russia?

Porsche
According to our source Porsche is looking for a production facility in Russia.
A Porsche assembly plant could soon be constructed in the Leningrad Region in northwest Russia, the Vremya Novostei daily said on Thursday.

Leningrad Region officials held talks Wednesday with Valmet Automative Inc, a Finnish outsourcing company assembling premium specialty cars of different brands, including the Porsche Boxter and Porsche Cayman.

The officials said the company is looking for a plant which could be re-equipped with new production lines, the paper said.

The regional government offered the company four potential sites, and the local governmental press service said the prospective investors were interested in the "attractive Leningrad Region."

"The negotiators did not specify which models would be assembled, but said the company wants to initially roll out up to 10,000 cars," the daily said. "Valmet Automative wants to inspect the sites on offer and if the company is satisfied, another round of talks will follow."

Audi A4 Avant: First drive review

Audi A4 Avant
Here's one of the best driving reports of the Audi A4 Avant so far. A must read!
Well, as it turns out, the new 2009 Audi A4 Avant is about as party hearty as a wagon could ever hope to be. And we’re not just talking about tailgate beer busts before the Bruins take on the Trojans. This car has style worthy of the Hollywood glitterati and moves that would make Justin Timberlake step back. Fabulous-looking, well dressed, quick on its feet, and with a damn good optional stereo—maybe Ibiza isn’t such a wrong match for the A4 Avant. Besides, this would be the first time we’d get a chance to sample the next generation of the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, and nothing says it’s party time like a turbo, right?

With its advanced suspension technology and all-wheel-drive, the 2008 Audi R8 sticks to the road around corners. The car's looks make it a real head-turner. The base audio system sounds very good, but that can be upgraded to an even better Bang & Olufsen system.

The 2008 Audi R8 is a serious blast to drive on the right roads.

Volkswagen: Piech is looking for a motorcycle company

Ferdinand Piech
It seems like Dr. Ferdinand Piech is still looking to buy a motorcycle company.
Volkswagen Chairman Ferdinand Piech would like Europe's largest car company to complement its stable of brands by acquiring a motorbike maker, he told German magazine Stern.

"I would still like a small, valuable motorcycle manufacturer," he said in an interview held jointly with his cousin, Wolfgang Porsche, who chairs the Porsche supervisory board.

Piech said he still regretted missing out on Italy's Ducati when it was in trouble in 1985 and a buyer could have snapped it up for peanuts.

"I myself drive a Ducati. 180 horses and more power per kilogram weight than a 1,001-hp Bugatti," said the Austrian, who will turn 71 on Thursday.

VW: Restricting Bluemotion supply

VW Bluemotion
The high demand of VW's Bluemotion models has led to a short supply and therefore VW is now restricting the delivery to fleet customers.
VW has admitted massive demand has led to it limiting supply of its low-CO2 Bluemotion versions of the Polo and Golf to the corporate market.

The company said its year’s allocation could have been eaten up by fleets, particularly local councils, ordering batches of cars to help meet public sector green obligations.

“We could sell our entire quota into the fleet market but we need to get some cars into showrooms,” said an insider.

VW Phaeton: Returning to US in 2009

The VW Phaeton will have a revival in the US in 2009!
To put it charitably, the Phaeton never met the U.S. sales expectations set by Volkswagen, but that hasn't stopped VW execs from considering another push to market the luxobarge in North America. Sales of the facelifted Phaeton are up in Germany by 45.4-percent for the first quarter of 2008 and that's making V-Dub's brass seriously consider bringing the Phaeton back to U.S. shores.

Porsche Cayenne GTS: It doesn't get any hotter

Porsche Cayenne GTS
Here's why the Porsche Cayenne GTS is so hot.
When it comes to Porsche , there's hot -- and then there's hot, hot hot! As anybody who knows cars will tell you, Porsche doesn't make cars that are slow. But even among the many variations and models of Porsche, some truly will raise hairs on the back of your neck.

Meet the latest addition to that creme de la creme group: the Porsche Cayenne GTS features a 405hp 4.8 liter V-8 engine. Based on the same V8 found in the Cayenne S, this more robust powerplant can be coupled either with an automatic Tiptronic S or, for the first time in a Cayenne V8, a six-speed manual transmission for those who want to take full advantage of this new power and suspension package.

The GTS gets its cornering prowess from standard 21-inch alloy rims equipped with 295/35 R21 tires and air suspension that features Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).

Lamborghini Murcielago, Bugatti Veyron: Got stretched!

Lamborghini Murcielago, Bugatti Veyron
Honestly we don't like stretch limos at all, but have a look at Carbonyte's creation of a Lamborghini Murcielago and they can do same for the Bugatti Veyron.
This time around, the Lambo is set to incorporate an additional rear axle for visual effect. Evidently not content to keep a low profile, Carbonyte is also working on plans for stretched versions of the two fastest seven-figure hyper-exotic supercars known to man: the Koenigsegg CCX and the Bugatti Veyron. We're a bit torn here: one part of us thinks Carbonyte ought to be stopped before they're allowed to hack apart any more exotics, while the other half is curious just to see them do it.

Audi A4 Avant: Enthusiast's driving report

Audi A4 Avant
If the guys from AudiWorld are writing a driving report of the new Audi A4 Avant, you better start reading. Interesting!
Quattro all-wheel drive aside how is the new 2.0T powerplant?

Quick. Surprising torque. The most capable single-turbo ever offered under the hood of a modern Audi. Fuel efficient. All the above - need we say more? Our admiration for Audi's turbo evolution is literally gushing, and backed up by the numbers. At 211 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque the 2.0T has balls even at low speeds, as evidenced by our jaunts up some rather steep and curvy coastal roads. Following closely behind a 3.2-liter V6-equipped A4 Avant we were able to keep it squarely in our sights throughout a spirited driving session.
