Audi TT-RS: Leaked specs

Audi TT-RS
Here are the leaked specs of the upcoming Audi TT-RS. A must read!
As previously rumored, power will be provided by a 2.5-liter TFSI five-cylinder, churning out 340 hp and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. Output will be delivered through a six-speed manual gearbox on its way to Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system, expected to have a healthy rear-wheel bias. The direct-injected mill should provide acceptable fuel economy, while returning a 0-60 time of just under 4.5 seconds.

In addition to the power upgrades, the TT RS will come equipped with 18-inch aluminum wheels, a duo of oval-shaped exhaust tips and an interior swathed in Alcantara and leather. There's no word on whether Audi will ditch the standard TT's magnetic dampers for a more track-focused suspension, and the memo didn't outline if carbon ceramic brakes would be an option.

Audi A4 3.0 TDI quattro: Review from Australia

Audi A4 3.0 TDI quattro
We found an Australian review of the Audi A4 3.0 TDI quattro.
Vital statistics: 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6, 176kW/500Nm, six-speed tiptronic gearbox, 6.9L/100km

This is a good engine in the Q7, a great one in the A6, and even better in the A4. There's a little bit of turbo lag off the line - there's bound to be a lag-busting twin-turbo version of this engine at some point, we'd hope - but once going there's a deep well of torque. Economy is very reasonable, too. We averaged 7.6L/100km against the official 6.9L claim, with some fairly spirited driving thrown in to test the dynamic suspension and steering set-up, as well as those steering wheel-mounted flappy paddles. It does feel like a sports car. The aluminium inserts in the cabin give the A4's interior a classy look and break up the otherwise sombre black.

VW Scirocco 1.4 TSI: Review

VW Scirocco 1.4 TSI
Nice review here of the VW Scirocco 1.4 TSI.
I'm so fond of the Scirocco because I love the GTI, and the Scirocco is simply a GTI with more... GTI.

The 1.4 TSI is a unique engine because it uses both a supercharger and a turbocharger to force 160 hp out of a pipsqueak four-cylinder. I've read about this engine for quite some time, but my expectations were quite different than the reality. I expected the TSI to howl with an audible supercharger whine from idle until some point around 4000 rpm, where I imagined that a big turbo would suddenly kick in, throwing the torque curve upward and me backward in my seat. In fact, the engine feels like it has a perfect flat plateau of torque from 2000 rpm until redline.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Sang Noir: Coming soon?

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Sang Noir
Is Bugatti working on a special edition Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Sang Noir?
The latter, an exposed-carbon fiber special that eschews paint in the interest of weight and raw appeal, may be getting another version, based around the topless Veyron Grand Sport, according to the latest reports.

While such a car may seem counterintuitive in the way that a Ferrari 430 Scuderia Spyder does to the performance-minded, it could make for a stunning piece of automobilia, and a fine contrast to the white Grand Sport revealed at Pebble Beach this year.

The report grows out of the sighting of a customer Sang Noir alongside a model of a topless version of the same at an exclusive customer event, according to CAR. Only 15 of the hyper-exclusive Sang Noirs are to be built in coupe form, but it now appears about that many could be built in Grand Sport roadster form as well.

Audi: Green city car is shaping up

Audi City Car
Audi's rumored city car (Audi A2?) is shaping up and we have more information for you.
Audi’s new car will rival top-end versions of the Ford Ka and Fiat 500. As you can see from our pictures, the model adds a distinctive body to the chassis of the up!, with a gaping grille, neat headlamps, beefy wheelarches and a sculpted rear end. But the most innovative move – and potentially the model’s biggest selling point – is the choice of ultra-economical powerplants. Engineers at the VW Group are working on a pair of 600cc two-cylinder turbocharged units – one diesel and one petrol.

Fuel economy is predicted around 95mpg, with super-clean CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km – meaning the Audi won’t cost a penny in road tax under current rules. The company is also toying with the idea of introducing a 1.2-litre
three-cylinder engine.

Yet near-100mpg fuel returns are clearly not enough – as an electric powertrain is also under development. Details are sketchy at the moment, but ultra-low running costs and emissions are guaranteed.

Audi MMI: Finally copied by BMW iDrive 4.0

BMW iDrive 4.0
We were enlighted to see that BMW's iDrive 4.0 will finally copy the Audi MMI which is available for years.
The much-criticized BMW iDrive central control dashboard has been updated to its fourth version, and it seems that this time they have got it right. Abandoning the previous compass-based user interface, the new iDrive adopts the hierarchical vertical menu system of the iPod, mixing it with an interface similar to the Xbox 360. Apart from the faster navigation this provides, they have also included new features to make it faster and more useful

VW Golf R32: 2009 model not coming to the US

VW Golf R32
If you want to get your hands on a VW Golf R32 in the US, you should better hurry up as the 2009 will not make it stateside.
Volkswagen spokesman Thomas Wegehaupt confirmed the R32's early exit out of the U.S., which means the original 5,000-unit allotment of hot hatches will be the only current-generation R32s to make it Stateside. Part of the reason for the discontinued R32 could have something to do with next year's arrival of the MK VI Golf Rabbit, which will be followed by a new GTI and possibly another R32.

The folks over at Kicking Tires say there are still 276 '08 models left in the US, so there are a few chances left to pick an R32 up.

Porsche Cayman, Porsche Boxster: More info about the leaked facelift

Porsche Cayman, Porsche Boxster
We have more information for you about the leaked facelift of the Porsche Cayman and Porsche Boxster.
Out goes the old 2.7-litre flat-six cylinder engine and in comes a new 2.9-litre unit with 265hp and 300Nm of torque, up 20hp and 27Nm over its predecessor. As a result, expect a 0-62mph in around six seconds for the entry-level Cayman.

A six-speed manual gearbox will be standard, but like the 911, Porsche's PDK twin-clutch gearbox will be available as an option and thanks to its snappier shift, expect a couple of tenths to be shaved off the 0-62mph time. Other options will include a limited-slip differential (LSD) for the first time too on the entry-level model.

The range-topping S models gets a 320bhp direct injection version of the new 2.9-litre engine, capable of accelerating the Cayman S from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds, with the PDK-version hitting the benchmark in five seconds dead. Not only do these improvement result in more performance, but they also help to reduce fuel consumption and emissions too.

Porsche 911 Turbo: New GT Street R package by TechArt

Porsche 911 Turbo
TechArt is very well-known for some great Porsche mods, the new GT Street R package for the Porsche 911 Turbo is no exception.
The GT Street R is fitted with a power upgrade kit, which boosts engine output to 660hp (485kW) and 634lb-ft (860Nm) of torque. These sees acceleration figures for the automatic 911 Turbo whittled down to just 3.4 seconds for the 0-100km/h sprint. The manual model takes just one tenth of a second more, and both models will reach a claimed top speed of 345km/h.

The increase in engine output is due to the addition of a pair of new turbochargers, large carbon fibre inlet pipes, special intercoolers, a sports exhaust system with high-performance manifolds, and an improved sports air filter.

Accompanying the list of engine mods is a new coil-over suspension set-up, a custom bonnet, carbon-fiber headlight and side mirror trim, sporty side sills, a carbon roof spoiler, and new air ducts behind the front bumper. The custom aerokit has been tested to add an additional 10kg of downforce on both the front and rear axles at speeds of about 140km/h.

Bentley Continental GT Speed: Review

Bentley Continental GT Speed
We found a review from Down Under of the Bentley Continental GT Speed. Enjoy!
It weighs a staggering 2350kg and can travel at an obscenely fast 326km/h (that’s 202mph) the first Bentley production car to hit the crash through the 200mph barrier. Acceleration from 0-100km/h will take you just 4.5 seconds or quicker than BMW’s M5. Not only that, the Speed can match the M5 in the S-bends too.

Although the engine is essentially the same as in the standard Continental GT, its been tuned to deliver more grunt.

Step on the drilled alloy accelerator pedal and get ready for a serious g-force assault. Initially – it feels like the Bugatti Veyron boosting up, as the torque driven acceleration for a car of these proportions, seems positively unnatural.

Audi A7: Is this how it will look like?

Audi A7
We certainly don't hope so with the Mercedes CLS-like butt...
The flowing lines of the coupe-sedan seem to be increasingly appealing in Germany with four of the countries top brands now releasing similar designs. The A7 will be based on the A6 platform and utilise aluminium (with steel reinforcement in key areas) to reduce weight.

Engines begin with a 2.8-litre V6 FSI with optional 3.0-litre V6 on the petrol front with diesel models said to include a 2.7-litre TDI (single turbo) or 3.0-litre TDI (twin turbo).

Meanwhile the range topping RS7 will feature air suspension and a 5.0-litre twin turbo V10 which will be shared by the S7, albeit slightly detuned. A hybrid version is also expected to be made available shortly after initial release.

Another nice review of our latest favorite, the Audi S4.
However - and this is where Audi's engineers have demonstrated their genius once again - this downsizing has not only caught the zeitgeist by improving fuel economy and emissions, but it has also resulted in a car that will meet the challenge of the BMW 335i and Mercedes-Benz C350 head-on.

The S4 is also an attractive proposition for anyone who fancies a car with a bit of performance on tap, but doesn't want to attract too much attention - especially in the even more unassuming Avant form.

Audi A4: Hitting record with 203.3mph on bio-gas

Audi A4
A modified Audi A4 has set a new record with a top speed of 203.3mph on bio-gas.
The search for less toxic alternative fuels is leading in many promising directions, one of which is bio-gas. Effectively a form of natural gas made from plants, the fuel was used this week to speed a modified B7 Audi A4 quattro to a bio-gas world speed record of 203.3mph (327.2km/h) on a test track in Germany.

Despite running on a mixture of methane and other gases generated by the controlled decomposition of grass clippings and sawdust, the Audi A4 used for the speed record generates a massive 585hp (430kW) from its overbored twin-turbo 3.0L engine. The project was completed as part of the Community Center of Excellence program at TUV Rheinland, with help in construction and execution from local tuning and transport companies.

Porsche 911 Turbo: Video game race against Nissan GT-R on Nurburgring

Porsche 911 Turbo vs. Nissan GT-R
You can end the dispute between the Porsche 911 Turbo and the Nissan GT-R about who's fastest on German Nurburgring, just head over to this cool game and the race is on!
Nissan and Porsche have fallen out big time about whose car is fastest around the Nürburgring. So it's high time we sorted out who gets the bragging rights.

Porsche laid down the gauntlet when it launched the latest 911 Turbo, setting a 7 minute 42 seconds lap. Then Nissan smashed it with a 7 minute 29 second effort.

But Porsche cried foul, accusing Nissan of using race tyres and even going so far as hiring their own GT-R to see how quick it was.

Nissan brushed off the accusations and sportingly offered Porsche’s test team driving lessons. Basically we’re as confused as you are, but we decided to do something about it.

Play our exclusive Nürburgring game in the latest issue of iMOTOR and decided once and for all who has the right to claim that its car is the true King of the ’Ring.

Audi A5 Cabrio, Audi A5 Sportback, Audi A7, Audi A8
Our highlight today: some leaked design sketches of the upcoming Audi A5 Cabrio, Audi A5 Sportback, Audi A7 and the next-generation Audi A8. Great design for the future!
Audi has instead given us some actual eye candy, providing official design sketches of four upcoming models: the A5 Cabrio and Sportback, the all-new 2010 A7 four-door coupe and the 2011 A8 sedan. While the A5 Cabrio looks pretty much like a topless A5 coupe, the A5 Sportback is unique for not looking at all like a traditional sportback model, instead bearing resemblance to notchbacks of yore. The A7 brings TT-esque styling to the burgeoning four-door coupe market, while the revised A8, at least in sketch form, looks just about tough as hell.

Nonetheless, the Touareg V10 is no slouch. Step on the right pedal, and after a momentary delay while the torque converter gets wound up and the turbos generate some boost, acceleration comes in a rush. We didn't try out any towing, but the way this thing accelerates at any speed, connecting a 7,700-lb trailer to the Touareg is unlikely to put any significant strain on the engine.

Porsche Panamera: Test caravan spied in Calaifornia desert

Porsche Panamera
We found some fresh spy shots of the Porsche Panamera caught testing in the California desert.
However the entire vehicle had only been seen covered with camo until recently, when images surfaced of an example wearing little more than covers on the headlights, taillights, and rear windows. Now it seems that the same minimal disguise is being used on Panameras testing in the U.S., as Motor Trend reader Matt Grant managed to snap a pic of no less than six of them cruising along interstate I-15 in the Mojave desert. Again looking a bit like a 911 that's been stretched to add room for a second set of doors, from this angle the Panamera's planted stance and muscular rear fenders are especially evident, though the model in the foreground is again wearing covers and strips of tape to disguise the true shape of its taillights.

Audi S4: You won't miss those two cylinders

Audi S4
We can't agree more with this headine! The new Audi S4 is an awesome car.
Running a Roots-style supercharger that sits between the cylinder banks and operates at a maximum 24.7 psi, the V6 cranks out 333 hp at 5,500 rpm. This is down 11 hp from the third-generation S4's naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8.

But the blown V6 also delivers 22 lb-ft more torque than the V8, an impressive 324 lb-ft being released between 2,900 rpm and 5,300 rpm. So there is no great hardship in the loss of two cylinders and 1.2 liters of displacement.

It is sufficient, Audi claims, for an official 0-to-62-mph time of just 5.1 seconds-- 0.8 second less than the old S4 and just 0.2 second shy of the time Audi quoted for the last RS4. A more-telling indicator of real-world performance, however, is the 50-to-75-mph fourth-gear time of just 4.4 seconds.

That is quick by any standard and reflects the effectiveness of the V6's prodigious torque in shifting the S4's 3,637-pound curb weight. Top speed is still limited to 155 mph, but there is little doubt the new Audi would haul beyond this if left to run all the way to its 7,000-rpm cutoff in top gear.

What is even more impressive is that the S4's supercharged V6 achieves all this with 27 percent better fuel economy than the V8. Audi puts the combined fuel-economy rating for the new S4 at 24.9 mpg.

Audi A5: Driving report

Audi A5
Nice driving report of the Audi A5 from Hollywood.
What's hot: Body as sleek as Heidi Klum's, Iron Man headlights, intelligent and demure interior

Hollywood is amusing from the behind the wheel of the new Audi A5. Ka-thunk the door behind you and all that is loud and colorful is immediately hushed, but still -- like a silent picture show.

On normally bustling Sunset Boulevard, traffic and pedestrians seem to tiptoe by -- though more than a few heads turn as the A5 passes. Pull into the parking lot of Trader Joe's and eyebrows rise, elbows nudge ribs, fingers point. Keep the windows up, you'll often be greeted by mouths forming appreciative smiles and soundless coos. Quite a feat in car savvy LA-LA-land.

The reason? The eyes have it. The A5's has headlight styling first seen on Iron Man's ride, Audi's flagship R8. Thin LED strips mounted just below the headlamps give off a cool, white glow, through sun or smog, day or night. Hit the turn signal, and the corresponding LED strip shuts off as the blinker comes on. It's a mesmerizing bit of design often noted by car cognoscenti and ignoranti alike.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4: New car road test

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4
The Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 scored 5 out of 5 stars in this road test.
So what's the fuss all about? Oh my God, where do I start?

I'm trying to think of another word for brutal but there is no other way to describe the acceleration of this car. Nought to 100 in 3.7 seconds (down from 4.0 for the original). Count it out loud. Now you're doing 100kmh.

That's because the engine has more power (up from 390kW to 412kW and yet it is 18 per cent more fuel efficient than before) and the body has less weight (it has trimmed 20kg to an even 1500kg on the scales). In the car world this is what's known as good maths.

A friend brave enough to sit in the passenger seat described it best: it's too fast for your brain. It's like the 30x fast-forward on your Foxtel IQ. All I know is that by the time I grabbed second gear I was already on the brakes.

The sound is phenomenal and there are two choices of exhaust note, which change at the press of a button: I call them "calm" and "angry". Calm is quiet enough not to wake the neighbours when getting the car out of the garage for an early Sunday morning drive. Angry is the switch you press when driving through tunnels.

Lamborghini has in effect added three more personalities to the car as well, by allowing drivers to choose just how much they want to be thrown around the cabin.

Comfort mode brings smoother gear changes and gentle throttle application, Sport mode sharpens gear-shift response and Track mode turns it into a race car.

Porsche 911: Driving report

Porsche 911
Here's a driving report with the Porsche 911.
The early verdict: The 911 remains a stunning track performer that’s quicker than ever, and its improved cabin controls have many competitors beat. But in drawing the line as a serious enthusiast’s car, it continues to come up short in comfort and convenience – not drastically so, but enough that casual drivers who just want a weekend cruiser should know what they’re getting into.

Bentley Arnage T: Review

Bentley Arnage T
We found another nice review of the Bentley Arnage T.
In many ways this is the best-ever Arnage, and not just because of the 500bhp/738lb ft, 6.76-litre V8 engine. Arnage was originally designed to take a rev-happy twin-turbo BMW V8 and when VW finally got control of the marque, it installed the old Rolls-Royce V8 to the delight of enthusiasts and pretty much all Bentley customers.

Last year, the car received the six-speed ZF transmission, which removed one of the drawbacks of the Arnage as well as improving its fuel economy – the old GM four-speeder was strong but very slow to swap ratios. The chassis changes wrought by chief engineer Uli Eichhorn and his team have improved the handling and ride of the big car far beyond that of its immediate predecessor, let alone the near 25-year-old Mulsanne Turbo. This is immediately apparent at the wheel where, despite its 2.6-ton weight, its 17ft 8in length and 7ft width, the Arnage rides well on pitted Essex roads. The body control is excellent, so the car doesn’t float into corners.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4: A new car for Italian police

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4
Lamborghini has donated a new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 to the Italian highway police. Too bad. Watch some videos below!
The Gallardo had already been used by Italian police since 2004. But the brand new LP560-4 platform now allows speeds of up to 203 mph; this in order "to continue accident and crime prevention to sustain security on the Italian roads," according to the Italian automaker. The new perp pursuer will first see service with the Lazio Highway Police Department.

Lamborghini claim that current Gallardo duty ensures these supercars have enjoyed very unsupercar-like reliability. Rome's first-gen Gallardo service vehicle has accrued almost 87,000 miles of patrol duty on motorways as well as emergency medical transport without a hitch, and a blue and white Gallardo serving B0logna since '05 has also needed nothing more than regular servicing.

Audi S4: First drive report

Audi S4
Georg Kacher had the chance to drive the new Audi S4, one of our favorite cars as of now.
And while the headline power figures might be down, they still surpass the equivalent Mercedes or BMW. The torque figure also bests both (and the old S4), while mpg figures are 26 percent better that before. The new S4 will even cost a few grand less than its predecessor.

That muted sound actually serves to make the S4 seem even quicker than it already is. Tickle the throttle and you’re away – speed is effortless, responses are immediate. The benchmark 0-62mph sprint is dismissed in 5.1 seconds, half a second quicker than the old car, while 50-75mph in fourth gear takes a mere 4.4 seconds.

Audi A5: Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year

Audi A5
The Audi A5 has been awarded with the Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year recognition.
The Audi A5 earned the Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year Award in the luxury on-road category, outperforming 10 competitors. The awards, now in their fifth year, recognize cars and trucks that are best suited to meet the demands of an active and athletic lifestyle.

"The A5 is the embodiment of Audi’s commitment to developing cars that are sporty, technologically advanced and a pleasure to drive," said Johan de Nysschen, Audi of America's executive vice president. "Audi stands for progressive prestige across its product lineup, so it's gratifying to learn one of our newest models meets the rigorous demands of active consumers."

The awards are presented by the Active Network, which operates active.com, Gen A Media and Marketing and AAA. The selection of the Active Lifestyle Vehicles of the year emerged from two stages of judging. The first round involved an automotive jury, which narrowed the field of 60 entries competing in seven categories. After four finalists were chosen in each category, the award's sponsors asked elite athletes from the San Diego region to test drive each of the vehicles and offer their opinions, which count for half of the award tallies. Altogether, 17 athletes participated, including professional beach volleyball players, triathlon competitors and a former NFL kicker. The automotive experts then registered their finalist votes for the other half of the tallies.

"Involving the athletes offers a great opportunity get fresh perspectives on the various vehicles so it becomes an impromptu focus group of an elite and active target market" said Nina Russin, jury coordinator for the Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year Awards. "What was interesting with the A5 was how the athletes really reacted to the car's athletic performance."

VW Golf: The safe choice

VW Golf
The new VW Golf has scored an excellent rating in European crash tests.
The independent testers at EuroNCAP put the new Golf through a series of rigorous tests. The result: five stars which is the best result compared with the direct competition.

The Golf, with over 26 million vehicles sold, is not one of the most successful vehicles in the world without reason: its diversity and quality are legendary and have made it a safe choice for over 30 years. With every detail perfected, the sixth generation is now setting new and higher standards for the whole Golf class and is thus the best Golf ever built. It is "Das Auto" and embodies the worldwide brand Volkswagen like no other vehicle. This excellent position was certified for the safety features of the new Golf in the most recent EuroNCAP-test: it achieved a phenomenal 36 of 37 possible points and was awarded five stars for occupant protection. It received four stars in the category child safety and thus achieved the highest possible number of points for biomechanical values. With three stars for pedestrian protection, the new Golf is, according to the ADAC, "a car with one of the best levels of pedestrian protection available".

Porsche 911 GT3 RS: New spy shots

Porsche 911 GT3 RS
We found some new spy shots of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. What a beast!
Facelifted GT3 RS is based on the Carrera 4 body featuring the same widened track and carbon fiber interior as the current GT3 RS, main changes are not very big when you compare it with the current model.

What’s probably most important is the power boost thanks to new direct-injection system. We have no information how much will the numbers change, but current 405 hp is already a lot. Also acceleration times will improve thanks to new Doppelkupplung dual-klutch system.

Exterior changes include LED daytime lights, redesigned taillights, larger air intakes and a new lip spoiler.

Lamborghini Jota: Spy shots of the Murcielago successor

Lamborghini Jota
Here are some fresh spy shots of the rumored Lamborghini Jota, the successor of the Lamborghini Murcielago, said to arrive in 2011.
Lamborghini’s next supercar will retain the Murcielago’s mid-engine layout but it will feature a wider track as evidenced by the extended fender flares seen on the test-mule. While power levels are usually boosted with each new model generation, for Lamborghini’s latest creation engineers are more likely to be focusing on reducing weight in their quest for increased performance. Thus, the new model will likely feature a lighter aluminum space frame instead of the current steel tub design. Expect plenty of carbon-fiber and other advanced composites in its construction.

A big-cube V12 engine will likely remain but the addition of direct injection technology should improve fuel-efficiency and power levels across the rev-range. In this way, engineers will be able to improve performance without having to boost power, the end result of which will be a much easier to drive Lamborghini flagship.

Bugatti Veyron: Road test

Bugatti Veyron
Another lucky guy who had the chance to road test the Bugatti Veyron, the uber car. And we agree with him: "It achieves 60 mph in 119 feet. It costs $1.7 million. What else do you need to know?".
It takes five weeks to build each car. Counting the heater core, the Veyron has 12 radiators. Sixty mph is yours in 2.5 seconds. The Bug will reach 150 mph 8.3 secondssooner than a Nissan GT-R. At its top speed of 253 mph [as tested by C/D, November 2005], it is traveling 371 feet per second and will empty its 26.4-gallon tank in 19 minutes. If you can’t locate fuel of 93 octane or higher, your dealer must detune the engine. Service, in general, will be expensive because it takes two persons—one of whom won’t be you—to remove the rear bodywork just to getat the engine. Four of this car’s Michelin PAX Pilots will set you back $25,000. If they’re mounted on wheels—a process undertaken only in France—well, that’s $70,000. The hydraulic rams that raise the rear wing at 137 mph are identical to those that raise flaps on aircraft. During the Veyron’s prototype days, a bird crashed through its aluminum grille—the car was humming along at 205 mph—so now the grille is titanium. The windows automatically rise and lock in place at 93 mph so your dog doesn’t lose his tongue. You thought the engine made 1001 horsepower? Nope. “They all make more than 1010,” says Bugatti’s Jens Schulenburg, who works in the “Gesamtfahrzeugentwicklung” department.

Audi S4, Audi S4 Avant: In detail!

Audi S4, Audi S4 Avant
Here's all you need to know about the Audi S4 and Audi S4 Avant. This is a killer car!
Faster, further, more agile: the new Audi S4 and S4 Avant are well-trained athletes. Their new engine, the 3.0 TFSI, combines the power of 245 kW (333 hp) with an astonishingly low fuel consumption of 9.7 (Avant: 9.9) liters per 100 km (24.25 US mpg or 23.76 US mpg for the Avant). The quattro permanent four-wheel drive system ensures practically loss-free transfer of this power to the road; a sports suspension and a high-performance brake system control it reliably. The dynamic look outside and in, together with the generous range of standard equipment, underline the exclusive character of both new S models from Audi.

The S4 and the S4 Avant are extending their lead even further with a package of optional performance technologies. The seven-speed S tronic changes gears with lightning speed without any interruption in the power flow and the new sport differential distributes the torque as needed between the rear wheels. With Audi drive select the driver can alter the working mode of the engine, S tronic and the sport differential as desired; dynamic steering and adaptive damper control round off the system. Delivery will commence in March; the basic price is very attractive at 50,950 euros (for the S4 sedan).

The 3.0 TFSI, the heart of the new S4 and S4 Avant, is the youngest member of the Audi V-engine family, and is an outstanding example of how the brand with the four rings blends performance and efficiency. The V6 generates its power from a displacement of 2,995 cc, is equipped with a supercharger, and delivers 245 kW (333 hp). The sedan sprints to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 5.1 seconds, the Avant in 5.2 seconds. They both have an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

Equally impressive is the mighty pulling power of the 3.0 TFSI – its maximum torque of 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) is available between 2,900 and 5,300 rpm. The supercharged V6 responds spontaneously and directly to the throttle in every situation. Despite its concentrated power it proves to be incredibly frugal – the sedan requires on average just 9.7 liters and the Avant a mere 9.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (24.25 US mpg and 23.76 US mpg respectively).

The V6 channels its power through a precise six-speed gearbox, fitted as standard. As an option, Audi offers a state-of-the-art dual-clutch transmission – the seven-speed S tronic is extremely dynamic and highly efficient. S4 drivers have the option of driving in fully automatic mode or selecting the gears with paddles on the steering wheel or directly with the shift lever – all of which provide impressively quick gearshifts. The gearshift feel is dynamic, comfortable and very precise – typically Audi.

quattro permanent four-wheel drive transfers this enormous power to the road with no loss. Under normal driving conditions it sends 40 percent of the torque to the front and 60 percent to the rear wheels; if necessary it can vary distribution within fractions of a second. The quattro drive system ensures safe self-steering characteristics, high stability and excellent traction in comparison with rear-wheel-drive competitors.

Audi Q7: A home run!

Audi Q7
A very nice review of the Audi Q7.
As we’ve come to expect from Audi, it is jam-packed with gadgets and technology including height-adjustable air suspension to give it the clearance to tackle boulder-strewn conditions without scraping its underside or the driver breaking a nail. Big, comfortable, safe, practical, handsome and powerful (the Q7, that is, because if it was a bloke, I’d marry it!) it also offers seven seats although five and six seat models are optional.

As with all Audis the Q7’s interior is high-quality in both construction and materials. If you have driven in an A8 or A6 the dash layout is similar, and Audi’s Multi-Media Interface (MMI) is standard, and, I feel, continues to be the most intuitive on the market. The Q7 has three rows of seating and accommodates six or seven passengers, depending on what is specified for the second row. As with many vehicles of this type, the third-row seat is cramped and useful for children only. With the second and third rows folded flat, the Q7 can hold a massive 2,035 litres of cargo space, which is more than what’s available from most five-passenger SUVs and competitive with other large luxury SUVs.

Microsoft SecondLight
WTF?
Microsoft seems to be throwing every wild touchscreen idea it can into research right now, first prototyping their weird SideSight cellphone motion detector earlier this week, and now revealing SecondLight, a “magic lens” compatriot to their Surface multitouch table. SecondLight allows users to slide a type of transparent screen on top of the regular Surface display, and see extra info displayed on the screen. For instance, using SecondLight over an image of a car turns it into x-ray specs that show model's wireframe underbelly.

VW Jetta TDI: Short take road test

VW Jetta TDI
We found a short take road test report of the VW Jetta TDI.
For 2009, the Jetta TDI gets a 140-hp turbo-diesel (40 more than the previous 1.9-liter engine) with 236 pound-feet of torque (59 more than before). The new engine is squeaky clean—enough so that it can be purchased in every state in the union. According to the EPA, the Jetta TDI achieves 29 mpg in the city and 40 on the highway, so we weren’t too surprised to get 33 mpg. What did surprise us was the TDI’s 8.1-second sprint from 0 to 60 mph, which was 2.2 seconds quicker than the ’06 Jetta TDI’s. In fact, this new TDI exactly matched the 0-to-60 and quarter-mile times of the last 170-hp, five-cylinder 2.5-liter gas-engined Jetta we tested. And that one even had a manual.

Put an unsuspecting driver in a Jetta TDI, and most wouldn’t think the car unusual in any way. The new 2.0-liter diesel feels far more powerful and refined than the previous 1.9-liter turbo-diesel engine.

Porsche 911 Carrera S: PDK driving report

Porsche 911 Carrera S
Here's an interesting driving report with the new PDK double-clutch transmission in the new Porsche 911 Carrera S.
In a complete reversal of trend, Porsche expects enthusiasts to prefer PDK over a traditional 6-speed manual transmission. Shake your head in disbelief, and then read on... First, the lightning-fast shifts with PDK best even the quickest manual or Tiptronic gear change (e.g., a 6th to 2nd shift took 1.05 sec with Tiptronic S – PDK drops it to just .42 sec). Second, there is no tractive-force interruption with PDK (no measurable loss of power to the pavement). Third, overall acceleration is quicker with PDK (Carrera S Coupe launches 0-60 mph in 4.5 sec with a manual, just 4.1 sec with PDK). Finally, PDK is absolutely consistent lap after lap. Few drivers, if any, can match that.

The new dual-clutch PDK leaves manual transmission junkies in the Dark Ages, and more than a bit miffed about the future of their century-old gearbox. Soccer moms will want the PDK for its smooth and seamless shifting, improved fuel economy, and reduced engine noise. Enthusiasts will choose the PDK for its shift speed, consistency, and lack of power loss to the wheels. Only passionate "traditionalists" who insist on three-pedal shifting for the sheer visceral enjoyment will choose the slower, less efficient, and more cumbersome 6-speed manual.

Porsche E-Ruf: Using electric engine by UQM

Porsche E-Ruf
Here's more information about the Porsche E-Ruf. Interesting!
The recently-revealed all electric Porsche 911 from longtime tuner RUF uses an electric motor from UQM Technologies. The motor offers up some 150 kW of power and seems to be an off-the-shelf motor that the company is capable of providing for automotive use. At first glance, the motor's 204-horsepower seems a tad low, but then you notice that its 479 lb-ft of torque makes up for that small issue. Ninety-six separate lithium iron phosphate batteries from Axeon power the motor, allowing the eRUF Model A to accelerate to sixty miles per hour in less than 7 seconds and allow for a range of up to 200 miles.

Audi S4, Audi S4 Avant: European prices unveiled

Audi S4, Audi S4 Avant
Audi has announced the European prices for the Audi S4 and Audi S4 Avant.
The S4, however, is no slouch. Its supercharged, direct-injected 3.0L V6 engine generates an impressive 333hp (245kW), about 10% more than the claimed power of BMW's twin-turbo inline-six unit found in the 335i, and pushes the car from 0-62mph (100km/h) in just 5.1 seconds.

All of this performance can be had for a starting price of €50,950 ($67,100) for the S4 sedan, with the Avant starting at €52,600 ($69,300), according to Automobilwoche. While U.S. pricing hasn't yet been released, the current S4 Cabrio is priced at $57,125, so the new cars should start around the $60,000 mark. Along with the price figures, Audi revealed the fuel consumption as well. The S4 sedan is good for 24.25mpg (9.7L/100km) while the Avant gets 23.75mpg (9.9L/100km).

VW Passat CC: Driving report

VW Passat CC
We found another nice driving report of the VW Passat CC. Nice car!
Then a car like the 2009 Volkswagen CC comes along, refuses to play by the rules and screws everything up. How? By offering more than a Mercedes CLS for less than half the price.

The thing about the CC is that it doesn’t deserve to be compared to the Passat, but instead to vehicles that cost much much more. Why? It offers a driving experience that’s at least equivalent to most entry- to mid-size luxury cars (there’s those damn categories again), classier looks, a larger interior, greater economy and doesn’t suffer from the image problems of it’s snobbier rivals.

The interior, too, leaves you thinking more high-end than entry-level. The fit and finish is top notch. Every button and lever is well-damped. Attractive accent lighting makes things look nice at night. Everything is as it seems; the chrome is actual chromed metal, the brushed aluminum actual aluminum and not a cheap plastic imitation.

Porsche 911 E-Ruf Concept: Test drive report

Porsche 911 E-Ruf Concept
Yes, you are reading right. We found a test drive report with the electric E-Ruf Concept based on the Porsche 911. A must read!
Look closely and you'll notice that all the air scoops in the front, sides and back of the 997 are now filled in and smoothed over. Peering into the cockpit, you'll see a dash filled with test gauges and a center stack equipped with several switches and connectors. Gone are the rear seats, replaced with a big hump just touching the back of the front seats.

Like many concept cars, the E-Ruf is an early prototype, by no means a production-ready car. Subsequent models will follow as the development progresses. In fact, this E-Ruf still retains the 997 clutch and the 6-speed manual transmission. In its final iteration, only one gear is necessary because an electric motor's torque output is instant and the speed is easily reached without multiple gears. And further, there is no need for a reverse gear because you can simply reverse the current and spin the electric motor backward.

But unlike many concept cars, the E-Ruf is driveable. With 479 lb.-ft. of torque available the instant you tip in on the accelerator, the E-Ruf moves off quickly with minimal fuss. As the mechanical sound you hear is the whine from the electric motor, wind and tire noise suddenly become more noticeable. In fact, you feel like you're in a spaceship blasting through the galaxy (especially in the thick fog). To slow down, regenerative braking is currently set at about 25 percent, pending final evaluations to achieve optimal brake feel.

Where this car really excels is in the driveline. Instead of the six-speed manual, we tested the optional $2600 six-speed dual-clutch S tronic gearbox which is lightning fast, intuitive and responsive to driver input.

Best of all is the subtle "burp" from the exhaust as it changes up under full charge. It's like a little sonic boom.

With its 2.0-litre TFSI, it belts out 147kW of power and 280Nm of torque. There is a momentary turbo lag, then cut snakes and scalded cats get out of the way as the little A3 starts to boogie.

With the transmission set in drive, it changes gears quickly up through the range to provide optimum fuel economy.

Audi S5: Stunning looks in Porsche Lime Green

Audi S5 Lime Green
Well, this one might not be everybody's darling, but to our eyes the Lime Green Audi S5 looks just fantastic!
Color me pleased; my 2009 Audi S5 has finally arrived, resplendent in vintage Porsche Lime Green. I hasten to add that this color is emphatically not the “Signal Green” which has become common on the current Porsche GT3 RS – it’s actually from Porsche’s 1973 and 1974 color book, and is a much brighter, more cheerful color than the rather more serious Signal Green. Readers of our S5 review may recall that I was smitten with Audi’s curvaceous V8-powered coupe from the moment I fired it up, so there was little doubt in my mind after our November test that I would eventually put one in my own garage.

Audi Imperator: The last of its kind

Audi Imperator
This is Vorsprung from 1929, the Audi Imperator.
This historic car was discovered in the German state of Saxony at the end of the 1990s, and purchased by Audi Tradition. Its history is exciting to recall: as was frequently the case in the 1920s, the customer (who must have been wealthy, since the car cost more than 16,000 Reichsmarks even then, as much as a small house) bought the Imperator as a chassis with engine. This ‘platform’ was delivered to a coachbuilder where the customer selected the bodywork of his choice or had it designed. In view of this, Peter Spillner had to conjure up something special. He explains his approach: “We looked at the original photographs in the Audi archives and decided to build an open touring car with a phaeton body.” The colour, too, was based on detective work: one of the headlights still bore traces of the original paint, which is best described somewhere between olive green and brown. Spillner, who is 35 years of age, and his colleagues visited several museums in their quest for detail authenticity. He recalls: “We studied cars of a comparable age, because all the manufacturers at that time had the same outside suppliers.”

VW Passat CC: Test drive report with nice photography

VW Passat CC
We have to admit we like this test drive report of the VW Passat CC, especially because of the great photography attached. Nice job!
The exterior strikes a distinct contrast from pretty much any VW I have seen before. The low stance and elongated form separate it from the older, boxier, rotund shapes of the Beetle and Passat. The car looks smooth and refined as opposed to muscle-y or flamboyant. Design moves we liked included the frameless doors, wraparound rear light arrays, the mini-spoiler, the spoke-like narrow rims, and the long, sweeping shadowline across the side panels.

The interior details pick up on the thoughtfulness of the engineers and designers. Before getting into the car, the windows automatically retract about a 1/4" to clear the seals in order to allow the frameless doors to open. Once inside, the bucket seats are firm and adjustable in every imaginable way. Contrast stitching on our model was a nice touch as well. The wheel, transmission and dash integrate nicely.

VW Jetta TDI: A quickie

VW Jetta TDI
Here's a quickie with the VW Jetta TDI. Enjoy!
The 2009 Jetta TDI employs the latest thinking in diesel tech to deliver a powertrain that not only meets 50-state emissions requirements (without a urea-injection system), but also delivers a driving experience that is conventional in every way — except for fuel economy. The new engine is a 2.0-liter with a 16-valve head, producing 140 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. The old TDI's mechanical injection pump has been ditched in favor of high-pressure, common-rail injection, which eliminates much of the typical diesel clatter. A particulate trap collects the soot that normally spews from the tailpipe, robbing the exhaust of its usual diesel odor. All this is happening now because the U.S. finally has, in significant availability, the kind of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD) used in Europe.

Porsche Panamera: Spy shots from San Francisco

Porsche Panamera
The Porsche Panamera has been spotted in San Francisco.
Thus, here's some of the clearest shots we've yet seen of the four-door super sedan from the German automaker. The Panamera was spotted by Flickr user Hysterical Bertha prowling the streets of Russian Hill, looking for potential customers among the affluent residents of the tony San Francisco neighborhood with some very crooked streets. Yup, it's definitely the Panamera — it even looks like the concept sketch.

Audi S5: Road test review

Audi S5
Very nice road test review here of the Audi S5.
The Audi S5 is the perfect modern foil for a strong but silent Humphrey Bogart. The charcoal gray exterior drapes over the well-toned muscular body like a fine wool suit, perfect creases and sculpted surfaces. Carved rims set off gentle flairs for the fenders emphasizing the understated nature of the beast. Thoughtful touches such as simple heater/air-con/radio controls, fitted seats in burnt orange leather, well matched plastics that feel just right, an electric lumbar-support that is well-padded offering excellent support. If the devil is in the details then Audi has spent the time to get them right as few have.

Audi TT 2.0 TDI quattro: Who says you can't have a diesel sports car

Audi TT 2.0 TDI quattro
The Audi TT 2.0 TDI quattro is without a doubt a true diesel sports car!
Having driven a variety of Audi and Volkswagen diesel vehicles and watched the R10s running on the race track I can affirm that, unlike in the bad old days of diesel, acceleration is generally no longer an issue with diesels.

Where the TT TDI shines is mid-range acceleration. Underway a quick stab of the accelerator sends the TT surging forward. Combined with the excellent grip and stability of the Quattro drive, the TDI torque makes accelerating away from corners a breeze.

Audi A3 TDI: Drives halfway across America on 46 mpg

Audi A3 TDI
Very impressive figures here from the Audi Mileage Marathon and the Audi A3 TDI: 46 mpg!
Again we ask: who needs a hybrid?
After driving over 2,800 miles and covering half of the United States, Audi's TDI clean diesel vehicles are passing the real world endurance test by posting admirable fuel efficiency numbers. With about 2,000 miles left in Audi's cross country Mileage Marathon, the Audi A3 TDI has averaged 46 mpg over the entire drive, the Audi A4 vehicles have averaged 39 mpg, and the Audi Q5 TDI vehicles averaged 33 mpg. The Audi Q7 TDI vehicles, clean diesel SUVs which will be the first TDI vehicles available in the Unites States early next year, averaged an excellent 28 mpg over the first two legs.

VW Jetta: Simply great fun

VW Jetta
Another nice review here of the VW Jetta.
Bathory likes diesels, he says, "because you don't have to service them much -- 100,000 miles between tune-ups is pretty good. The mileage is good and the reliability."

When he's buying a car, he says, "reliability comes first."

After driving the car around town and on the highway south and west of the city, Bathory was very enthusiastic.

"It's always a joy to drive that car," he smiles. "It just handles extremely well. It's tight. It's fast. It always does exactly what you want it to."

The new 2.0-litre, TDI four cylinder engine, he says, is "way superior" to its predecessor, never mind gas engines.

"There are no glow plugs to warm up. You just put the key in and turn it, so no waiting time. It's only five or 10 per cent noisier than a gas engine. You'd have to get a V-6 in a gas engine to match it."

Audi S5: Road test review including great photography

Audi S5
We found a really nice road test review of the Audi S5 including some stunning photography. Make sure to watch!
Slide into the surprisingly comfortable seats with Alcantara inserts and push the start button. The 4.2L, 354-hp DOHC V8 doesn't roar to life like you would expect, but just sort of wakes up from its slumber. The shift knob for the 6-speed manual transmission fits solidly and comfortably in your hand.

Give the S5 some gas and you are off...not in a flurry of tire smoke and wheel spin, but in a calm and collected movement with a barely noticeable burble from the dual exhaust. The exhaust on the Audi S5 is almost too quiet at times but when you do notice it, it sounds wonderful.

Audi Q5: Capable and handsome

Audi Q5
Nice driving report here with the Audi Q5.
The toughest segment manufacturers can waltz into right now is probably the “compact luxury crossover” class — in English, these are small SUVs built on a car chassis. Think of the paradoxical demands they must meet: luxurious but sporting, capable off-road but pleasant on the highway. They must get decent gas mileage but tow trailers, and they should be able to carry tons of stuff, but still be small. Yet with handsome looks, a slick interior and sedan-like handling, the Audi Q5 may be the best balance yet.

Audi RS4: Used car review

Audi RS4
With the new Audi RS4 (RS5) just around the corner, the current generation makes a really good used car. Read here why.
You've got to hand it to Audi for not being afraid to tackle the opposition head on. As BMW has become more cheeky with it 3-Series-based M3, so, too, has Audi's A4-based RS4 hottie.

The previous-model RS4, with its super-punchy, twin-turbocharged, V6 engine, remains a firm favourite with enthusiasts everywhere. But when BMW announced plans for the new M3, with a V8 replacing the traditional in-line six, Audi figured it needed to take the RS4 down the same technological path.

The result was a car that not only beat the M3 to market, but closed the performance gap.

Audi's RS4 is available as a station wagon, convertible and four-door sedan.

While the convertible is a bit cruisier, the Avant station wagon is brilliant.

It's a hole new look for the Polo. Volkswagen is upping the stakes for its long-serving supermini in a bid to keep up with the trendy new Ford Fiesta.

As our exclusive images reveal, the styling will closely mimic that of the new Golf MkVI as VW aims to revamp its look throughout the brand. Destined to arrive in May 2009, the fresh baby will boast familiar robust build quality along with generous spec.

Top models will get luxury kit such as touchscreen sat-nav, automatic park assist and a rear view camera. Both safety and handling are boosted, too, due to improved structural rigidity and a tweaked chassis. The engine range kicks off with two petrol-powered three-cylinders delivering 59bhp or 69bhp.

VW Jetta TDI: Review

VW Jetta TDI
Another nice review of the VW Jetta TDI.
The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI has no direct competition.

This diesel car burns up oily fuel a drop at a time, making the Jetta one of the best and most efficient vehicles available in America.

Yes, I like diesels. And if you want an affordable vehicle that can carry five people from Detroit to Atlanta on a single tank, you should too.

Now I've heard lots of arguments against diesels: there's the "premium" consumers have to pay for a diesel engine; the smoky exhaust and pollution. And then there are the dirty pumps, the fuel costs more, it smells awful and blah blah blah.

Look folks, here's a car that can get real world mileage in the 40s. It's a durable engine (which needs its oil changed every 10,000 miles). It's a spacious car. It looks nice and this car is still cheaper per mile than most vehicles on the road today. And when did gas start smelling good to anyone but huffers too cheap to buy spray paint?

Porsche Panamera: Hybrid partially revealed

Porsche Panamera
Porsche has partially revealed some information about an upcoming Porsche Panamera Hybrid.
Although no other information is currently available regarding the Panamera Hybrid, the potentially fuel-saving system could be a factor in attracting sales away from its Aston Martin Rapide and Lamborghini Estoque rivals. Based on these images, it appears the car's Cayenne-sourced V-6 engine is mated to a hybrid module and spindly actuator, while battery packs are located at the car's rear. The use of a V-6 as the basis of the hybrid model makes perfect sense considering the unit's power and fuel-efficiency benefits over the bigger V-8.

The video is interesting in that it seems to acknowledge all of the negative press and complaints about the concept of, well, a four-door Porsche.

Lamborghini: Where the Lambos are born, factory visit report

Lamborghini
We found a very cool report of a factory visit to where all Lamborghinis are born. Enjoy!
My tour began where few visitors have been allowed to venture and where every Lamborghini has been built since production began in 1963 with the 350GT. Unlike many frenzied and deafeningly loud highly mechanized factories, the Lamborghini headquarters housed diligent and dignified employees gently and quietly assembling each phase of the project by hand, without a speck of dirt to be found, or a tool out of place.

While glancing up from their work to politely smile, each employee seemed to take pride and care with each movement, no matter what their area of assembly or expertise. The construction of each Gallardo, I was told takes two to three days to complete from start to finish, where the Muciélago takes three to four. This may seem like a small number compared to assembly-line-built mass produced passenger cars, but it is baffling once you see what goes into the construction of each car. Making the production time even more impressive is the fact that, thanks to Lamborghini’s many customization choices, made even more plentiful thanks to the new ad Personam program, few cars (if any) leave the facility identical to any other.

One of the most exciting aspects of the factory tour was not seeing the state-of-the-art assembly tools, or the massive engines awaiting their chassis, or the bare bodies awaiting brightly colored panels. No, the most exciting aspect of walking down the assembly line was that it gave me an opportunity to see inside the heads of so many Lambo owners.

From this vantage point it was possible to see how soon-to-be owners chose to outfit their raging bulls. The taste of some owners, I must admit, ranged from admirable to questionable. My personal favorite was a manual transmission Gallardo boasting a brooding matte black painted finish with black leather interior and cherry red stitching on the seats, steering wheel and dash. If I were to leave the facility with a car today, that would be my choice.

Audi RS5: Snapped again at Nurburgring

Audi RS5
Some more spy shots of the Audi RS5. Enjoy!
Set to go head-to-head with BMW’s M6 and Jaguar’s XKR, the newcomer will pack some real punch – our insiders reckon it will use a twin-turbo 4.2-litre V8. That should mean 450bhp, a five-second 0-60mph time plus a 155mph top speed. And that’s why this prototype has a deeper front spoiler with larger air intakes – they’re there to keep the engine cool. The rest of this mule’s bodywork is very similar to that of the S5, but the finished car will get bulging wheelarches, side skirts and huge twin oval exhaust pipes.

It is also rumoured that Audi is developing a bootlid spoiler which pops up at speed to keep the car stuck to the road surface. Under the skin, the engine will be bolted to quattro four-wheel drive with a 40:60 rearward power bias, while the transmission will be a twin-clutch seven-speed S tronic semi-automatic. There’ll be magnetic dampers and vast vented disc brakes, too. The RS5 goes on sale in 2010 and will cost around £50,000.
