At first glance the GTD gives nothing away to the GTI in terms of looks. It gets the new Mk6 GTI bumper and rear lights, plus a dual tailpipe at the rear. The only way to tell them apart is the badge.
So let’s get straight to the numbers. The Golf GTD is powered by Volkswagen’s familiar 2.0-litre turbo diesel, but it’s been tweaked to develop 168bhp and 258lb-ft torque. This may not sound much next to the GTI’s 210bhp, but peak torque is available from as low down as 1,750rpm, so there’s plenty of acceleration.
It will reach 62mph in 8.1 seconds – that’s over a second behind the GTI – and go on to a top speed of 138mph. But when you consider that it will manage 44.4mpg and CO2 emissions are just 139g/km it starts to make quite a case for itself.
