Nice test drive report here of the new VW Touareg Hybrid.
For all that, the fuel economy statistics seem extraordinary. The Touareg Hybrid is powered by a supercharged V6 petrol engine that develops 328bhp and a 46bhp electric engine, enough to push it from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds. Yet it is claimed to return 34.4mpg. By contrast the Volvo XC90 V8 is less powerful and therefore should consume less fuel. Yet without hybrid assistance it does just 20.9mpg, and emits 317g/km of CO2 compared with the Touareg’s 193g/km.
