Here’s an interesting, more technical background article about the new 7-speed S tronic in the Audi TT RS.
The new seven-speed S tronic is designed to be highly efficient at every engine speed. Its greatest possible spread – the ratio between the first and the last gear – is 7.45:1. In the TT RS it is 6.6:1. The transmission features a tall seventh gear configured as an engine-speed reducing overdrive to reduce the fuel consumption of the high-performance sports car.
The driver can choose between two automatic modes for the seven-speed S tronic or shift manually using the selector lever or shift paddles on the steering wheel. In addition, a launch control function offers essentially perfect acceleration from a standing start, with maximum turbo power and minimal wheel spin.
