Los Angeles is a unique place. Replete with clashing cultures, epic traffic, and endless culinary delights, L.A. is one of the few locations on Earth where a 500-horsepower, zero-to-sixty-in-three-seconds-flat, $150,000 Porsche 911 Turbo is dismissed as just another shiny car in an ocean of gleaming, high-roller sheetmetal.
Some may consider this phenomenon unfortunate — I don’t. As “just another Porsche”, the 911 Turbo’s currency increases threefold in my book. Its relative anonymity can be explained, of course. After 40 some years, the 911’s iconic profile has been ingrained into popular culture, and the Turbo has become something of a sophisticated sleeper because of it. This is a car that can stomp just about any car this side of a Veyron, yet it barely draws more than a passing glance on L.A.’s streets. Despite its low profile, there are some who understand the Turbo’s subtle cues — its voluptuous rump, the optional forged center lock wheels, gaping rear intakes/outlets, unique front clip, etc. They double-takes and ask me how fast it is when I stop at local gas station.
