Audi: Production details and info for new navigation system in the Audi R8, TT and A3

Audi Navigation System
Read here all the details about the updated navigation system for the Audi R8, Audi TT and Audi A3.
When does production start of cars fitted with the new system?
For A3 and TT, we're told production will start along with the MY2010 changeover. If it's a 2010 A3 or TT, it should have the new system installed.

For the R8, production will be slightly delayed by about 10 weeks. Officially, R8 production with the new system should begin in week 32. Why the delay? Audi wasn't specific, but we suspect it's got something to do with the R8's different layout. The CD changer in the R8 is mounted behind the seats and this area will likely need to be redesigned to a standard that meets Audi's quality demands in order to replace the changer and make room for iPod docking.

What about retrofits?]
Initial word on retrofits from Ingolstadt is that this is a 2010 thing only. We pointedly asked if you were to swap the unit into an older Navi-equipped car whether it would work and the answer was no. We asked if this was a software issue or a hardware issue (i.e. new or different wiring harnesses etc.) and were told it is probably hardware but that this has not yet been confirmed. In other words, replacement won't be plug and play but we suspect there will still be those who figure out a workaround given the resourcefulness of the online enthusiast community.

One last thing... A3/TT vs. R8 without Navi
This upgrade applies to all R8s as R8s get a screen even if they don't get navigation. That's not so in the case of the TT or the A3. Non navigation TT and A3 models don't get a screen and thus will not get the new level of iPod connectivity offered by these updated units.

Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro: Comparison against Auto Union D-Type Grand Prix car

Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro
Very interesting comparison here of the Audi R8 V10 against the Auto Union D-Type Grand Prix car from 1939. Enjoy!
A starter motor that sounds like it's off a vintage aircraft turns over the 3.0-liter 3-cam V-12, and the first tentative cylinder firings suggest this is a gut-powerful, low-revving engine. Yet when it clears its throat and catches, the V-12 revs with ease, a sharp-edged roar as the tach needle climbs, heavy gear whine as it falls back. If you must dim your hearing...

Then Ian McFarland climbs into the wide seat of the mid-engine machine, reattaches the steering wheel and roars off down the straightaway, headed toward what look to be vintage racetrack pits. Squint a bit and you could almost see Hermann Paul Müller rushing up that same straight on July 9, 1939, winning the French Grand Prix.

You read of how the sight and sound of the German Grand Prix cars gave pause to the English and French as war loomed ahead in 1939, and this explains it. Sure sounds like a low-flying piston fighter plane.

Audi: How to import music with the new MMI and Jukebox

Audi Jukebox
Here's a nice how-to report about how to import your music into Audi's new Jukebox which can be found eg. in the new Audi Q5. By the way, Japan had this feature for years already.
You can take music from a “burned” CD but be aware that the 3G MMI Jukebox is somewhat particular about what brand of CD you use, as well, the format must be MP3. Now when it comes to an iPod or similar device, you have to tranfer the music onto an SD card first and import it or you can use a memory stick, however if this is the case you will need a special designated Audi cable to transfer the music (Cable part #4F0 051 510 G). The jukebox system works very well and is very convenient. If I were to make a suggestion it would be to put the music you plan to import onto an SD or flashcard because the import is much quicker then from a burned MP3 CD. The process to import the music is very simple but make sure on the 3G MMI that you are using a card 4GB or less.

Audi: 135ft monument unveiled at Goodwood

Audi
Audi has unveiled its massive monument at Goodwood to celebrate the brand's 100th anniversary during the Festival of Speed.
This year's sculpture that was commissioned for Audi is a big swoosh of tire tracks with a 1937 Auto Union streamliner and new Audi R8 V10 suspended at either end. Standing 135-feet tall and weighing 40 tonnes, as they say in Britain, the piece is made entirely of steel to support itself without braces or cables. Gerry Judah is the designer, as he has been for Goodwood's featured art installations since 1997 when he first designed one for Ferrari. This is also the second time he's produced a piece for Audi, the first one being back in 1999.

Audi A6 3.0T quattro: US review

Audi A6 3.0T quattro
Nice review here of the Audi A6 3.0T quattro. Have a read!
Nestled between the cylinder banks is a belt-driven compressor huffing enough air through the manifold to deliver 300 peak horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque between 2,500 and 4,850 rpm. In the A6, the engine was developed to deliver instant, seamless acceleration at freeway speeds. And it does. Flawlessly. The belt driven blower means turbo lag is nonexistent and with this much grunt available at the flick of an ankle, it could easily replace the V8 before long. Although the engine – shared by the 333 hp 2010 Audi S4 – has been slightly detuned, the 4,123-pound A6 gets to 60 mph in just under six seconds and you'll never be struggling to merge onto the highway or make a pass on a two-lane road.

Also updated for 2009 is Audi's all-wheel drive setup, and like the versions employed on the new A4 and A5, the reworked Quattro system features a 40/60 front-to-rear torque split. Approaching the limits of grip, the A6 offers a more balanced feel, eliminating much of the understeer traditionally associated with 50/50 AWD platforms. Power is transferred via a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that allows the shift lever to be pushed to the right for manual gear selection.

Audi Q5: Review

Audi Q5
Here's another nice review of the Audi Q5.
At last, the American-spec Audi Q5 has arrived. And to celebrate, I took one to my favorite canyon road. Naturally, such gnarly stretches of tarmac are not the kind of thing a crossover SUV is built for, but the Q5's (new A4) underpinnings suggest a depth of handling talent not found in rival machines. In the best sense possible, it rocks. Which means it doesn't rock. Or roll. Body control and overall composure is remarkable, even without getting into the adjustable parameters of throttle response, gearshift speed and active suspension tweaks.

The one engine currently available for U.S. buyers is Audi's well-known and well-loved 3.2-liter V6 (although there's talk of a 2.0T version coming down the pipe). Here it develops 270 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, reined in by the aforementioned electronic trickery plus stability control and Quattro all-wheel drive, yet it never feels smothered by them, or by the Q5's 4,178-pound curb weight. This is a lusty, trusty drive.

Audi Ur-Quattro: More intel about 2010 comeback

Audi Ur-Quattro
We have more intel for you about the rumored comeback of the Audi Ur-Quattro in 2010.
Focusing on lightweight through materials and design, the new Quattro is expected to weigh in under 3,080lb (1,400kg). The light-weight program could include motorsports-inspired touches like polycarbonate in place of some of the glass, reports Auto Motor & Sport, as well as thinner glass elsewhere and extensive use of aluminum.

Lightweight but large wheels - 19 or 20in - are planned, as are ceramic brakes and possibly an active rear spoiler. At each corner a magnetic-ride suspension will dynamically adjust to the conditions and whim of the driver, while the quattro sport differential keeps the AWD system at maximum traction.

Both a twin-turbo V6, rated at 425hp (317kW) and a twin-turbo 2.0L four, rated at about 300hp (223kW) are on the short list, though the 2.5L five-cylinder out of the TT-RS would be the most authentic choice, matching the cylinder count and displacement of the second-gen Quattro, built from 1987 to 1991. If Audi goes that route, output could be as high as 375hp (280kW).

Audi A5 Cabriolet: Riding out the storm

Audi A5 Cabriolet
Nice review here of the beautiful Audi A5 Cabriolet.
Yes, it looks that bit exclusive, and it does pose the threat of a fairly stiff annual road tax bill here in Ireland, but it also carries a touch of real cabrio class while managing to avoid breaking the fuel-money piggybank. I found that the three-litre common-rail diesel engine will, if treated half right, give you surprisingly frugal consumption.

I won't say I always thought of the fuel gauge when on the open road or on a good series of long, sloping bends. I did, however, cover a fair band of middle Ireland in rain and sun, over good and awful surfaces. The more I drove, the better it got.

Audi Q5 3.2 quattro: Comparison against BMW X3 xDrive30i and Volvo XC60 T6 AWD

Audi Q5 3.2 quattro
Interesting comparison here of the Audi Q5 3.2 quattro against the BMW X3 xDrive30i and the Volvo XC60 T6 AWD.
The Audi Q5 continues the brand’s path toward a more performance- and style-oriented car-builder. It offers the best combination of all-around sport and comfort and has by far the best user interface for controls, gauges, and electronic do-dads. It’s styling is more conservative, which will likely attract more buyers than it will scare away. Yet at the same time, it does include some subtle aggressiveness borrowed from Audi’s rally past. It’s boxed fender flares scream “Ur quattro” while its elegant D-pillar is cut similar to that of an S5 and again, has some Audi heritage drawn right in.

Audi A5 Sportback: New spy shot shows more detail!

Audi A5 Sportback
Here's another new spy shot of the upcoming Audi A5 Sportback which shows much more details than ever before! Make sure to watch.
I’m very excited for this car, simply because it provides a more sporting, even more attractive option for buyers looking for something with the versatility of a hatch, but comfort and style as well. At the Q5 driving experience I became smitten with Audi’s CUV and appreciated many of it’s unique details which helped it achieve a bar higher than the A4 Avant in terms of the overall impression it gives. The A5 Sportback makes the same upwardly mobile stride. It provides a more modern, crisp antithesis to the taller Q5 or the A4 Avant. It is sportier – the A5 design language an inspired alterative to the A4 Avant. It’s simply gorgeous from the outside, as mentioned, the design of the C-pillar, the way in which it tapers into the trunk, the width and heft of the overall design, replete with many sinew creases. It all goes a great deal towards masking the car’s actual size and is a definite one-up compared to the 5 series GT.

Audi TT RS: Driving report

Audi TT RS
Another nice driving report with the Audi TT RS.
Same sledgehammer performance as the other RS cars?

Oh yes; the TT RS is properly fast. Its Quattro four-wheel drive traction slings you off the line, you’ll hit 60mph in 4.6 sec, quicker than any of its rivals, and because torque is capped from just 1600rpm its responses are almost equally urgent regardless of where the tacho needle is pointing.

The noise is equally impressive: like half a Veyron on full reheat. The top speed of 155mph can be raised to 174mph for a fee, but even that is limited. Fully derestricted the engineers say the RS will do around 180mph.

Audi A5 Sportback: Fresh spy shots from the US!

Audi A5 Sportback
We found fresh spyshots of the soon to arrive Audi A5 Sportback, caught in the US. Have a look!
I had the chance to poke my head around the A5 sportback this morning, it's a wonderful car. Out of respect for the gentlemen handling it I didn't snap any shots of the car with the camouflage off, but it's very much what you would expect the A4 with an A5 rear superimposed upon it to look like. It's very very cogently penned. All the lines are very crisp, and I honestly prefer the profile from the side to the A5 and the BMW 5 series GT.

Inside the dash is the standard A5 affair with a different sort of trim than I'm used to seeing here in the US, though It's an ingolstadt car so who know if it'll make it over. Kind of a perforated metal look. Most importantly, the rear seats are quite a bit more roomy than I had expected. About on par with the A4. It's hard to tell from the spy shots but there is a reasonable amount of head room in the back thanks to the way the roof liner kind of arches up towards the rear inside. Visibility out the rear windows is a little obscured by their dramatic cut downwards and backwards to facilitate the sloping rear.

Audi A3 2.0 TDI quattro: Road test review

Audi A3 2.0 TDI quattro
Very nice driving report here with the Audi A3 2.0 TDI quattro.
Let’s play a word association game; when I say diesel what words come to mind? If you said: smelly, loud, sluggish, and/or boring you would be correct when referring to old diesels but you would be very wrong when talking about what is currently available. Need further proof of this? The Audi A3 TDI is here and more than happy to oblige.

The first thing I noticed when turning the key of this A3 TDI is the 2.0L turbo diesel comes to life not with a sputter and burble, but with a quiet purr. There is no old diesel rumbling, no old diesel exhaust stench and no old diesel noise. This new clean diesel technology in the Audi is run on common rail direct injection and piezoelectric injectors for smooth and efficient performance at all speeds.

Audi RS5: Spy shots and video?

Audi RS5
Are these spy shots and a video of the slated Audi RS5? We remain doubtful, but have a look by yourself.
The Audi RS5 will be equipped with the well-known 4.2 V8, pushing out a little over 450 hp. And like the S5, also the RS5 is likely to see a topless version. In the video below you can hear the sound of the new Audi RS5 as it’s produced by the V8 driving up the mountain.

The Grossglockner, where the Audi RS5 was spotted, is one of Austria’s main tourist attractions. The 48km long alpine road that starts in Bruck and ends in Heiligenblut leads you through the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, to the highest mountain in Austria, the Grossglockner (3,798m) and its glacier, the Pasterze. The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse as it’s called in German, features 36 bends, and an altitude ascent to 2,504 metres!

Audi A6 3.0T quattro: Follow-up test with video

Audi A6 3.0T quattro
Interesting follow-up test here of the Audi A6 3.0T quattro including a video.
A Supercharger, You Say?
Isn't that word reserved for modified American V8 dragsters? What's a supercharger doing on an upwardly mobile six-cylinder Audi sedan? The answer: providing power in a more efficient package.

Replacing last year's normally aspirated V6 that produced 255 horsepower, this new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 is capable of 300 hp, getting close to the V8's 350 hp but for $10,000 less.

Despite worldwide sales that outpace its main competitors, the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class, Audi sold only 12,000 examples of the A6 in the U.S. last year, so it hopes that this blast of power will spur some market interest. But can a midsize sedan with a supercharged V6 be relevant in these fuel-conscious times? According to the EPA, this new, efficient Audi V6 is rated at 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. While on paper this is only 1 mpg better than last year, it's important to remember that this new V6 is producing 50 hp more.

Audi: Future model plans

Audi
Have a look at how Audi's future model plans are supposed to look like.
Audi's other hatchback sedan, the A7 Sportback, will be unveiled well into 2010. The Audi Sportback concept unveiled in Detroit this past January provides a clear idea of what the finished product will look like. Significantly longer than the A5 Sportback and more independent in style, it will be positioned between the A6 and the A8.

Far bigger news for 2010 is the A1, a compact, three-door hatchback that shares many components with the new Volkswagen Polo. It is positioned well below the A3, which itself is due to be replaced in 2011. That year will also see the launch of a five-door A1, and the Q3—which recently was confirmed for production—a crossover based on the Golf/A3 platform and built by VW's subsidiary SEAT in Spain. The A6 is due to be replaced at that time, as well.

So Audi has a lot on its plate until 2011. What's next? Audi is considering its own variation of the tiny Volkswagen Up, and one possibility on that platform is an all-electric version. Another possibility is a version powered by a conventional combustion engine that could achieve well over 110 mpg in the European cycle.

Another project currently being explored is a second-generation A2.

Audi A5 Sportback: All you need to know, so far

Audi A5 Sportback
Here's all you need to know so far about the Audi A5 Sportback.
The powerplant of the A5 Sportback is another advance along the path of innovative technologies Audi has been charting: All engines are of the direct injection type – the diesel versions are sophisticated common rail TDI units while the gasoline engines are based on the FSI concept. All engines meet the EU5 exhaust emission standard. The diesel versions are equipped with particulate filters.

Initially the A5 Sportback will be available with a choice of two gasoline and three diesel engines. The two gasoline versions, the 2.0 TFSI quattro with an output of 155 kW (211 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque and the 3.2-liter V6 quattro generating 195 kW (265 hp) are both equipped with the Audi valvelift system. This feature can produce more power and higher torque as well as lower fuel consumption.

The following engines are also available right from the start: the 2.0 TDI with 125 kW (170 hp), 350 Nm (258 lb-ft), a 6-speed manual gearbox and start/stop system, the 2.7 TDI with 140 kW (190 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), and the three-liter V6 TDI with 176 kW (240 hp) plus an enormous 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of maximum torque and quattro all-wheel drive.

The newly developed ESP control with electronic differential lock on the front axle ensures noticeably improved steering response as on the Coupé and Cabriolet and compensates effectively for change-of-load reactions - which increases driving safety.
The perfect addition to this technology package is the Audi drive select dynamic driving system – this allows the driver to choose between three different modes which influences the throttle response characteristics, the shift points for the seven-speed S tronic or multitronic transmissions, and supports the servotronic steering. If the vehicle is equipped with the MMI operating system, a fourth, freely programmable level is also available.

Audi drive select can only be ordered in conjunction with one or more of three additional technologies – adaptive shock absorber control, dynamic steering with continuously variable assistance and quattro with sport differential for the 3.0 TDI and 3.2 FSI versions.

Audi Q7 3.0 TDI quattro: Driving report

Audi Q7 3.0 TDI quattro
Nice driving report here with the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI quattro.
Green Car Reports' John Voelcker pointed out the TDI's new small diesel is "a good alternative that TheCarConnection.com recommends for those who balk at the mileage" of the gas-powered versions. The new 3.0-liter, turbocharged clean-diesel (TDI) V-6 has 221 horsepower and, more importantly, 406 pound-feet of torque, which makes it especially well suited for those who tow, he points out. "Although the TDI doesn’t have the instantaneous throttle response of the V-8, it’s almost as quick overall, too."

Once in motion, TheCarConnection.com's review ninja Bengt Halvorson had kind words for the Q7 TDI's ride. "It was very composed, never queasy or rough on the hoppy 101, and it was one of the more pleasant back seats I've ridden in recently," he noted.

Audi A8: Next generation slightly delayed

Audi A8
The debut of the next-generation Audi A8 will be slightly delayed from the Frankfurt Motor Show in September to an exclusive event in Florida in December.
The 2010 Audi A8 has now been pushed back from its original debut schedule at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show to a remote location at an exclusive event in Florida sometime in December.

What for? Apparently, Audi doesn’t want the 2010 A8 being overshadowed by other auto shows debuts scheduled for Frankfurt. The design is said to be so revolutionary and important to Audi that it doesn’t want it to become “just another auto show debut.” The 2010 NAIAS in Detroit will be the first auto show to host the new A8.

Also Audi doesn’t want the 2010 A8 to kill the sales of the current model, which is still going strong in some markets. The 2010 Audi A8 is scheduled to go on sale in spring 2010.

The car will be open for ordering with an entry price of EUR 36,050 for the 2.0 TDI version. A version with an even more attractive price will follow in the middle of 2010. This will make the A5 Sportback the entry model for the A5 model range.

The A5 Sportback represents a milestone in car design. The five-door coupe excels in its elegant, elongated, sporty profile. The large hatchback fits perfectly into the tail-end styling. The spoiler lip and the diffuser insert provide contrast and emphasize the athletic tautness of the elongated contour. The coupe-like silhouette is the result of a roof section with a long, tapering roofline that is moderately lower by 36 mm (1.42 inches) than the A4 Sedan and of the short overhangs at the front and rear as well as the long wheelbase of 2,810 mm (9.22 feet) and the four frameless doors with their slim, dynamic window styling. The unusual hatchback design is distinctively emblematic of the vehicle's excellent functionality. With the Sportback, the designers of the Avant are setting trends in tail-end design while combining sportiness, comfort and utility in a completely new way.

The unique functional concept in conjunction with the emotion-packed design creates a cutting-edge mix of coupe and Avant. The baggage volume of 480 liters (17.0 cubic feet) nearly equals that of the A4 Avant, and it has an impressive 980 liters (34.6 cubic feet) with the rear seatbacks folded down.

The A5 Sportback provides a full measure of comfort on all four seats and convenient entry and exit through every door. Despite the fact that its exterior height is less than that of the A4 Sedan and that its roof tapers at the rear, the Sportback has comparable headroom and legroom.

Audi R8 V10 Spyder: New spy shots from Nurburgring!

Audi R8 V10 Spyder
We found some new spy shots of the Audi R8 V10 Spider, a car many are waiting for. Have a look!
As for the R8 Spyder, a spokesman for Audi previously confirmed that it has been delayed to allow time for sales of the V10 hard-top to eventually die down. The Audi rep also confirmed that the Spyder will feature a full convertible soft-top roof instead of a smaller targa set-up, which was the preferred choice of engineers back in Germany.

Other major changes for the car that are expected to make it to production will be additional air intakes located behind the seats, as well as a pair of safety roll-over bars. Sadly, the R8’s trademark aluminum side blades have been removed. The placement of the fuel filler cap will also be changed due to the missing rear pillars, while changes under the sheet metal will likely include extra chassis strengthening.

Audi Q5: Driven

Audi Q5
Nice driving report of the Audi Q5, Audi's latest hit.
Among them, the Audi Q5 may be the best yet. It’s one of the most handsome sport-utes, offers a real-world traction system that emphasizes on-road performance, and its cabin has enough adult space for four passengers and their suitcases and laptops and, sure enough, their 1-liter bottles of water.

Step inside the Q5, and the rich impression made by the sheetmetal is amplified by maple trim, closely coordinated leathers and plastics. The Q5’s dash can seem somewhat cluttered, but good design and delicate metallic highlights lend it a unified, rich look. It’s comfortable as well: as long or longer overall than all the competition save for the 2010 Lexus RX, the Q5 is among the widest vehicles in its class, and sports the longest wheelbase. In our driving, the Q5’s interior room provided relaxing seating for four adults, with really not much room for a fifth on the second row of seats. Seating itself is firm and leathered up, and all positions adjust at least a couple of ways for cruising comfort. Headroom is ample, and the cargo hold doesn’t suffer even when the second-row seats are reclined: four or five suitcases will fit back there.

Audi Q5: Comparison against BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK

Audi Q5
Interesting comparison here of the raved Audi Q5 against the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLK. Nice win here for Audi!
The Audi Q5 is new for 2009, and scores highly for its suave looks and its spacious interior. Editors liked its appealing style, inside and out; the quality feel of cabin and controls; its ample V-6 power; and its standard all-wheel-drive.

Audi A5: Review of Audi Dynamic Suspension System

Audi Dynamic Suspension System
Interesting review here of the Audi Dynamic Suspension System, eg. from the Audi A5.
I had been playing with the Audi's Dynamic Suspension system, toggling from comfort to dynamic to sport and back again. At the touch of a button the Audi's demeanor changes considerably. The car feels 25 percent stiffer and the headlamps' oscillations become markedly tighter. The steering and throttle maps become more responsive, more aggressive. If this car were a shark, you could tell it was ready to fight, its body rigid and unyielding.

Audi A6, Audi A8: Exclusive interview with Anthony Foulk, Audi of America, Inc.

Anthony Foulk, Audi of America, Inc.
We found this through Audi of America's newsletter: an exclusive interview with Anthony Foulk, product manager for Audi A6 and Audi A8.
Q. What sets the Audi A6 3.0T apart from the competition?
A. The A6 is a luxury sports sedan with a unique combination of progressive design, sportiness and luxury. With the powerful new 3.0 TFSI® engine, it also has class-leading fuel economy* to go along with quattro® all-wheel drive.

Q. What most impressed you the first time you drove the A6 3.0T?
A. What's most important to me in a car is the way it feels when you drive it. The first time I drove the new A6 3.0T, I was amazed at the way 300 horsepower and 310 foot pounds of torque felt. With this new engine and rear-biased quattro all-wheel drive, the car has the power and poise to handle almost any situation. And when it comes to handling, the revised suspension feels sporty and responsive, yet comfortable.

Q. The supercharger is back. Why is Audi championing its return?
A. Our engineers looked hard at whether turbocharging or supercharging would be best for the proven 3.2 liter Audi V6. In the end, we determined that the combination of a Roots supercharger and Audi's FSI® direct injection was the best solution. For a V6 engine, supercharging gives the best combination of immediate take-off power, improved fuel economy and lower emissions. And, it gives us the ability to put the 3.0 TFSI in any Audi that has a V6 engine because the Roots supercharger simply sits on top of the engine
in the 'V'.

Q. The A6 3.0T gets 26 mpg on the highway – what attributes of the vehicle allow it to be this efficient?
A. The characteristics of a supercharger allow the transmission gearing to be optimized for fuel economy while using the immediate torque for acceleration. Also, to make the 3.0 TFSI more efficient, several new technologies were developed, such as a friction-reducing graphite coating for the supercharger blades and new, more precise fuel injectors. Finally, in addition to the engine, the new A6 has an energy-recuperating alternator for improved fuel economy and a new power steering pump, which uses less energy.

Audi A7: New intel!

Audi A7
We have new intel for you on the upcoming Audi A7 Sedan and Cabrio.
A very wide range of powertrains will be offered in the A7 and its S7 and RS7 sport-focused variants. Everything from diesel-electric hybrids to 600hp V10s will be found under the hood of one variant or another. The hybrid drive is expected to show up first in the company’s Q5 soft-roader. A diesel-electric version is rumored, but the company may end up using a gasoline engine instead.

The more ordinary A7 variants will be powered by a pair of V6s. The first, a 204hp 2.8L engine is the base model, while the 3.0L supercharged engine making 300hp will be the first step up. An upgrade to S7 trim will bring with it another 94hp in the form of a 4.0L V8. The RS7’s 600hp 5.0L twin-turbo V10 is the range-topper. The S7 and RS7 will be released two years apart, with the S7 arriving first in late 2010 or early 2011 and RS7 after that.

Audi Sport quattro S1: Driven by Allan McNish

Have a look how Allan McNish is driving with the Audi Sport quattro S1. Audi fans rejoice!
Between 1982 and 1986, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, the governing body for many motor sports) sanctioned rallying’s Group B, a category that spawned the most powerful and dynamic rally cars ever seen in the World Rally Championship (WRC). This class allowed manufacturers to showcase their engineering prowess and it was enthusiastically embraced by Audi, Peugeot, Lancia and Ford, among others. One of the most extreme machines created for Group B was the Audi Sport quattro S1. With a shortened wheelbase and super-lightweight body made out of Kevlar panels, a monstrously powerful turbocharged five-cylinder engine and a four-wheel-drive powertrain, this car was a rally-winner straight out of the box.

Audi R15 TDI: 24h Le Mans preview

Audi R15 TDI
Here's a very nice preview of the 24h Le Mans which is starting in a few hours!
In so many ways, 2009 is all about the numbers and not just those on balance sheets. This is Audi’s tenth straight year at Le Mans. After that first trial year with the R8R, the now-legendary R8 and R10 have contributed to a full eight wins in nine consecutive starts, only losing once during that time to sister brand Bentley which could trace is chassis and engine design back to the Audi R8 program. Eight wins in nine years is certainly a bragging right. But nine wins in ten years sounds better.

2009 is also a special year for Ferrari. It’s been 60 years since the brand’s first win here – an accomplishment they’d achieve a total of nine times (1949, 1954, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965). Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari and Fiat Group President, will give the honorary starting signal on Saturday afternoon. And, while no less than ten Ferrari F430 GTs will chase the Audi R15s and R10s across the starting line, they have no practical chance of contesting the overall win with Ingolstadt.

Should Audi win this year, it will tie Ferrari for all-out wins here in Le Mans, leaving them second only to Porsche with its almost insurmountable 16 wins (1970, 1971, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998).
Behind Audi and Ferrari, the next closest brands are epic badges in their own right: Jaguar (8), Bentley (6), Alfa Romeo (4), Ford (4).

Driver records are also impressive. Tom Kristensen didn’t arrive at his nickname “Mr. Le Mans” lightly, having won here eight times (six in a row from 2000-2005 and six total with Audi). Of the eight drivers who’ve won four or more times at Le Mans, three are Audi factory pilots (Biela and Pirro have each won five times).

In the vein of anniversaries, it’s also been 50 years since Aston Martin’s first and only win here with none other than Carroll Shelby as one of the winning drivers. It’s no surprise then that Aston is coming on strong, with a full factory effort in LMP1, their eyes set on an all-out win.

The last number worth mentioning here is the first. One. Only one tire changer will be allowed to work at a time on cars as they pit, which will force teams to extend stints of tires and put more pressure on pit crews. This will make for an interesting new factor in overall pace that will affect every team on the grid in one way or another.

Audi Q5 Hybrid: Coming for 2011 models!

Audi Q5 Hybrid
Another confirmation that the Audi Q5 will receive an hybrid option soon.
For now, the powertrain in the Q5 will continue to be the 270-horsepower, 3.2-liter V-6 installed in every U.S.-bound vehicle. In 2011, Audi plans to fit a hybrid gas-electric powertrain in the compact SUV, though the powertrain hasn't yet been identified. And since the Q5 is related to Audi's A4 range, it's not difficult to see the same powertrain make its way into various sedans, wagons, perhaps even the A5 Coupe and Cabriolet.

The hybrid versions will precede any diesel Q5 to market, Audi has said.

Audi Q5: Top safety results from IIHS and NHTSA

Audi Q5
The Audi Q5 has received top marks for safety both from the IIHS and the NHTSA.
And that's why luxury vehicles are so often found at or near the top of the list. It's no different with the 2009 Audi Q5, which is equipped with most of the safety devices available on the market today, enabling it to rank tops in both IIHS and NHTSA testing.

“Audi engineers place unwavering emphasis on the protection of motorists and their passengers,” said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. “These outstanding ratings for the Audi Q5 confirm our intent to meet the most rigorous safety standards found anywhere in the world.”

Audi R8: In praise of Audi's brilliant supercar

Audi R8
Nice driving report here with the Audi R8.
So when I finally wrangled my way into the R8, I did so in a fairly sceptical frame of mind. And everything I read was right and everything I thought was wrong. The R8 is brilliant. The way its goes, corners and stops is a revelation – its excellent body control, accurate steering and super-smooth powerplant make it such an easily exploitable car. I drove the manual and loved the light clutch and wristy gearshift action, but even more astounding was the beautifully damped ride quality.

The R8’s trick magnetic suspension set-up sponged away intrusions and flowed the car along the road with more skill and sophistication than any other four-door saloon in the Audi line-up. Fine visibility, a spacious and intelligently configured cabin, decent stowage space and an air of complete civility made a mockery of most supercar norms.

Everything about it just clicked – it felt beautifully cohesive and integrated. Its badge may not have supercar kudos, but everything else is spot on. It’s all the more impressive when you realise it’s well over two years old now – time has not aged the brilliant Audi R8 one jot.

Audi: Completely rethinking how to build cars

Audi
Audi will completely rethink how to build cars and especially save weight. First results are expected soon.
Significant weight reduction is very important for the future, he says, because it will be the “basis for the electrification of the car”.

However, this dramatic weight-saving programme will also be of huge benefit to its conventionally powered cars.

It will help to give them much-improved handling and better performance even with significantly less power.

The MLP is apparently being used as the basis for the company’s “in-depth” investigation into making future cars much lighter.

The first prototype to be generated by the programme is a special S5 coupé, which is 400kg lighter than the current production version, according to Dick.

Dick says reducing the weight of the bare bodyshell is “the most important thing” and that “losing 150kg will deliver better dynamics”.

Audi Q7: CGI of next generation and new intel!

Audi Q7
Have a look here how the next-generation Audi Q7 might look like.
The magazine's designer took extra care to integrate Audi's current and known future design. the evolved grille is combined with a very interesting take on the floating grille design seen on the TTS. It's quite handsome.

As for the next-gen Q7, we can tell you what we know. First of all, the Q7 will migrate from the current underpinnings to Audi's modular longitudinal architecture (MLB), as will its VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne cousins. The move will offer much more flexibility in design thanks to cost savings through use of shared components with other MLB offerings that will eventually range from the A4 on up to the A8.

As for engines, we expect a brawnier next-generation 3.0 TDI, and a new base engine using the 3.0T FSI will debut in the facelifted version of the current car before that lifecycle is over.

Audi TT RS: New pictures released

Audi TT RS
Audi has released new photos of the great Audi TT RS. Have a look!
Audi is once again producing a five-cylinder engine – and a very special one at that. Arriving at dealerships this summer, the TT RS has a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine with direct gasoline injection; it produces 250 kW (340 bhp) and 450 Nm (331.90 lb.-ft.) of torque. The blazing five-cylinder engine enables the TT RS to perform extraordinary feats. In conjunction with quattro permanent all-wheel drive and a high-performance chassis, the engine makes the compact Audi TT RS a top-notch sports car – available as a coupé or roadster.

Sporty five-cylinder gasoline engines have a long legacy at Audi. The most famous is arguably the turbocharged 2.1-liter engine in the Audi quattro. The first version, which was launched in 1980, offered an impressive 147 kW (200 bhp). And the Sport quattro from 1984, directly inspired by motorsport, delivered a whopping 225 kW (306 bhp). For 25 years, turbochargers and quattro have been a dynamic formula for success.

Audi has resumed using this recipe. Designed from scratch, the five-cylinder engine combines a turbocharger with FSI direct gasoline injection to elevate the TT RS to a high-performance sports car. The TFSI delivers 250 kW (340 bhp) from a displacement of 2,480 cc (151.34 cu in): a specific output of 100.8 kW (137.1 bhp) per liter.

The power-to-weight ratio is also outstanding. In the case of the Coupé, which weighs in at a mere 1,450 kilograms (3,196.70 pounds), the power-to-weight ratio is just 4.3 kilograms per bhp. The Roadster has a weight of 1,510 kilograms (3,328.98 pounds) and a power-to-weight ratio of 4.4 kilograms per bhp – thanks to its extremely lightweight and largely aluminum body constructed as per the Audi Space Frame principle.

The TT RS Coupé rockets from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62.14 mph) in 4.6 seconds; the Roadster needs just a tenth of a second longer. The limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph) is merely the official figure for both versions; as an option, Audi can increase it to 280 km/h (173.98 mph).

Almost even more impressive is the aggressive pulling power. The maximum torque of 450 Nm (331.90 lb.-ft.) is always available between 1,600 and 5,300 rpm. In addition, the TT RS overtakes without the slightest effort. Last but not least, its engine makes passengers' skin tingle time and again thanks to its speedy and powerful response, its inspiring free-revving character, and its unmistakably guttural tailpipes: five-cylinder classical music by Audi!

Audi R10 TDI: Driving report

Audi R10 TDI
Yes, you are reading right. This is a driving report of the Audi R10 TDI LeMans racer.
Say a little prayer. Then punch the little black starter button…

The 5.5-litre twin-turbo diesel V12 jumps to life. I’ve been instructed to familiarise myself with the throttle for sensitivity. To my surprise, the engine flicks up and down the rev-range like a sewing machine. It’s so smooth. Responsive. Free from inertia. Even without moving away, it feels every inch the finely honed three-time Le Mans winner it is.

The first two laps are frustrating. I’m to follow a camera car at 50 per cent power, on wet tyres, so the Michelin slicks can be kept warm, ready for my four laps proper. With a firm shove of my left leg, the short-travel clutch sinks to the floor and the first gear engages with a clunk. The camera car is halfway up the pit lane by the time I’ve feathered the clutch and dialled in some rpm, and my heart feels as if it’s beating faster than the engine is turning over.

Audi: Why Audi of America is cutting V6 models

Audi S4
Interesting information here why Audi of America is cutting back on V6 models with the arrival of the new Audi S4.
According to Carter, the move is simply a streamlining of the lineup. As he explained, the model with the widest-reaching ramifications from such a change must certainly be the A4. Audi’s B-segment sedan accounts for nearly 50 percent of North American sales, so Herndon doesn’t make a fundamental change to the A4 without a serious degree of investigation and thought.

As it turns out, current buying trends are moving toward the A4 2.0T. Power levels for the turbo’d four, now in its latest EA888 generation complete with Valvelift, have never been closer to that of the normally-aspirated V6. And, with a supercharged 3.0T-powered S4 just a few months away, the positioning of the 3.2 within the range was about to be pinched tighter.

Carter tells us the positioning of the S4 will be slightly adjusted within the line. As most readers know, the North American S5 retains its 4.2-liter V8 for now, so that car will be positioned in more of a premium place as compared to the S4. When the S5 switches to the 3.0T with its 2011 freshening, we suspect the A5 3.2 will also disappear. In the meantime, Audi of America is doing its best to price the S4 as competitively as possible.

Audi A6 3.0T quattro: Expert review

Audi A6 3.0T quattro
Another expert review, this time with the Audi A6 3.0T quattro.
Mash the gas from a stop, and the 3.0T delivers linear power that propels the 4114-pound sedan to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, 1.5 seconds sooner than the old 255-hp, 3.1-liter A6 Quattro hit that mark. Sure, the BMW 535i xDrive and Mercedes E550 4MATIC are quicker, but the BMW requires twin turbos, and the Benz has eight cylinders. More importantly, neither can match the 3.0T's 18 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway. A big surprise is that this new Audi even outruns the current V-8-powered A6 4.2 Quattro — despite the bigger engine's 50-hp advantage.

Audi A8L 4.2 quattro: Comparison against BMW 750Li and Mercedes-Benz S550

Audi A8L 4.2 quattro
Interesting comparison here of the Audi A8L 4.2 quattro against the BMW 750Li and the Mercedes-Benz S550.
The gap from third to second is huge; then second and first places hang tight. Winner in its last comparison test five years ago, the A8L remains a delicious and compelling automobile.

The Audi's brand of special treatment begins the moment you climb aboard. The cockpit radiates artistry, from the glow of the gorgeous wood trim to a headliner trimmed in chocolate-colored, suede-like Alcantara ("I don't know whether to stroke it or eat it," says Loh). Without the giveaway of the steering wheel, you could be convinced you're sitting inside an exclusive L.A. club. If you need more evidence, have an earful of the optional, $6300 Bang & Olufsen audio system (including elegant tweeters that rise out of the dash). For the price of a good motorcycle, you're in woofer-thumping, Biggie-bumping bliss.

"The balance between ride and response is lovely," Loh writes. The Audi scored second-highest on lateral grip, yet its ride doesn't give up much (though it's no match for the creamy Benz). Straight-line speed is third by a good margin, but the Audi puts its power down so smoothly you likely won't mind. The 750Li driver will beat you in a sprint, but he'll suffer for it.

Audi TT RS: First drive review

Audi TT RS
Another nice driving review of the Audi TT RS.
Thanks to direct injection, there is instant torque even at low rpm and before the turbo kicks in—and it kicks in quickly. From 1600–5300rpm, 332 lb-ft are on tap. This engine does everything well. You can cruise along lazily in top gear, or you can rev it up to the limiter, which you are guaranteed to hit if you don't watch the tachometer because the boost just does not drop off. This is one of the few turbo engines which accelerates seamlessly and eagerly beyond redline.

Audi A3 2.0T quattro: Expert review

Audi A3 2.0T quattro
Here's an "expert" review of the Audi A3 2.0T quattro.
With Quattro all-wheel drive, the hatch is a more playful companion on back roads than is the front-drive version, which understeers resolutely when you're driving hard. The all-wheel-drive system is surprisingly neutral and, when combined with the sharp, well-weighted steering, makes the A3 fun to toss around.

The A3 has the full complement of safety equipment you'd expect of an upscale German car. It has anti-lock brakes, stability control, and an array of airbags that includes full-length side curtain bags. The A3 is rated as a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Audi TT RS: The brawniest TT yet

Audi TT RS
Cool review here of the Audi TT RS, the brawniest TT yet.
What’s it like?

Loud. Or at least it is with the ‘S’ button depressed. This changes the throttle map and opens the exhaust baffles to tell the world that there’s something more potent than a four-pot lurking under the bonnet. The five-cylinder arrangement gives a characteristic off-beat thrum under full throttle and the occasional pop and splutter on downchanges.

The surprise here is quite how boisterous the engine is for the usually super smooth Audi brand. It can get intrusively bassy when loaded from low revs, but switching 'S' off, trims this back to an acceptable level.

Sounding the part is one thing, but the better news is that the TT RS has the performance to match: 0-62mph takes just 4.6sec, and unrestricted it will run to 174mph. To say it has a strong mid-range is a bit of an understatement, with that peak torque available from 1600rpm all the way to 5300rpm. But equally it is not shy of revving right to the redline.

Audi A6: Still looks fresher and dapper

Audi A6
Nice review here of the Audi A6 from South Africa.
And the extra air stuffed into the engine by the charger means the car's basically as quick at altitude as at sea level.

Sometimes you wonder why every engine isn't force-fed.

In terms of how much power it's squeezed from a 3-litre engine Audi's achieved an impressive thing, although the execution could do with some work as this A6's power delivery is almost too instant and brutal.

Audi TT RS: The purist driving machine

Audi TT RS
Here's all you need to know about the Audi TT RS. Make sure to listen to it as well!
Five-cylinder engines are in Audi’s DNA. The company is once again building such an engine – this time a high-performance engine. The Audi TT RS, developed by quattro GmbH, sports a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine with FSI direct gasoline injection under the hood that produces 250 kW (340 hp) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque, yet consumes only 9.2 liters/100 km (25.57 US mpg). In conjunction with quattro permanent all-wheel drive, the powerful five-cylinder model offers explosive performance, making the compact Audi TT RS – whether the Coupé or the Roadster – a purist driving machine.

The TT RS Coupé rockets from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 4.6 seconds, the Roadster in 4.7 seconds. The governed top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) is merely the official figure for both versions; as an option, it can be increased to 280 km/h (174 mph). Peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) is available between 1,600 and 5,300 rpm, providing tremendous pulling power. The TT RS Coupé requires only 9.2 liters of fuel per 100 km (25.57 US mpg), while the Roadster consumes just 9.5 l/100 km (24.76 US mpg) – another example of how Audi combines dynamics and efficiency.

The powerful five-cylinder unit is very compact and particularly lightweight. Its large turbocharger generates up to 1.2 bar of relative boost pressure. At full load, the intercooler reduces the temperature of the compressed air and achieves an efficiency of more than 80 percent. When the driver pushes the standard Sport button on the center tunnel, a flap installed in the left exhaust tailpipe renders the exhaust noise even more intense while making engine response more direct.

The Audi makes a strong case for class-leading dynamics, resisting both front-end push (understeer) and body roll remarkably well for a high-riding soft-roader. The all-wheel-drive system also provides excellent traction out of corners whether they're wet or dry. For the record, our test car was fitted with optional 18-inch wheels rather than the standard 17s.

Audi A4: 226.6mph top speed on bio-gas

Audi A4
A modified Audi A4 has hit 226.6mph top speed on bio-gas.
The search for less-toxic alternative fuels is leading in many promising directions, one of which is bio-gas. Effectively a form of natural gas made from plants, the fuel was used this week to speed a modified B7 Audi A4 quattro to a new bio-gas world speed record of 226.6mph (364.6km/h).

Despite running on a mixture of methane and other gases generated by the controlled decomposition of grass clippings and sawdust, the Audi A4 used for the speed record generates a massive 700hp (522kW) from its overbored twin-turbocharged 3.0L V6 engine. What’s more impressive is that the powerplant is capable of producing upwards of 800hp (597kW), but output was limited this time ‘round to keep the transmission intact.

Audi R8 electric concept
Street word has it that Audi will show an electric Audi R8 concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year.
However, the big news is the rumored reveal of an electric version of the R8. Details are scarce, so it's unclear if the R8 concept will be a pure EV, a diesel/gasoline-electric hybrid, a limited production model or, more likely, just an indication that Audi is looking at future powertrains.

Audi Q7 V12 6.0 TDI quattro: Crap? Brilliant? Jeremy Clarkson.

Audi Q7 V12 6.0 TDI quattro
One of Jeremy Clarkson's more interesting reviews, this time of the Audi Q7 V12 6.0 TDI quattro.
That’s because this is the first road car ever to be fitted with a V12 diesel. It produces 493 horsepowers — more than any other diesel — and 738 torques. That’s about 160 more than you get from a McLaren SLR: 738 torques is enough to restart a dead planet.

You would imagine that with such an engine lurking under the bonnet it would be impossible to drive. Nope. The herculean torque is sent quietly and with no fuss to each of the four wheels.

Audi: Interview with Stefan Sielaff about intelligent design and Audi's rivals

Stefan Sielaff
Interesting interview here with Stefan Sielaff, head of design at Audi.
Q . Most car designers benchmark Audi. Whom do you benchmark?

A . We look at what the other high-end manufacturers are doing: Aston Martin, Bentley. Within the VW group, I love Bentley and Lamborghini.

Outside the VW group, I have to say Aston Martin. They are doing very emotional products, with good design quality.

Land Rover is also a brand I like. I like the authenticity and clean design language.

If you look at BMW and Mercedes, they're doing baroque cars and baroque interiors, very heavy and overdecorated. I don't want a heavy or bulky interior.

Audi S4: Drive report from down under

Audi S4
Nice test drive report of the Audi S4 from down under.
On paper, the raw numbers suggest the change from eight cylinders to six has made little difference. Power is down a mere 8kW, while torque is up by 30Nm to 440Nm, thanks to Audi’s first supercharger since the 1930s.

They’re impressive figures for a car that uses less fuel than a four-cylinder Toyota Camry – and almost a quarter less than the previous S4.

The new car is almost half a second quicker in the 0-100km/h sprint, thanks mainly to the extra torque and the new seven-speed twin-clutch automatic, which changes gears quicker than most drivers can select them manually.

It’s also quicker through corners, with the lighter V6 helping the car’s balance and poise in the twisty stuff.

We’ve been consistently impressed with Audi’s interior design over the years, and this heavily optioned sample carries on the tradition as it dares to trim the interior in a honeyed wood-grain it calls “ash almond beige.” It’s so appealing it competes with the road for the driver’s attention.

Audi A5: Weekend review

Audi A5
Very nice weekend review here of the Audi A5.
Picking up the A5 at the airport and jumping into the leather and suede seats after sitting on a coast-to-coast red-eye flight was a surprisingly good feeling… for a seat to be supportive and comfortable is all you can ask for, and Audi makes that happen here. Once fully inside the cabin, key fob in pocket and push-button start effectively pushed, it was time to head out on the highway - looking for adventure so to speak (someone should use that line in a song perhaps).

The local crowd’s staring eyes glowed with the same intensity as the LED daytime running lights of the A5. To be honest, I was a bit shocked with the amount of “ooh-look-at-that points” and “wow-that-is-cool stares” since this car is not new anymore. But it is just that good looking.

Audi A3 2.0 TDI: Diesel with a healthy dash of sport

Audi A3 2.0 TDI
Here's an interesting US review of the Audi A3 2.0 TDI.
Speaking of twisty stuff, we saw plenty of it during our time in California. While working on a project in Thousand Oaks, we spent time traversing canyon roads between there and Malibu in a variety of vehicles, including the A3. The A3 was the only front-wheel-drive car that we drove, but it held its own quite well. Like the Jetta that we raved about in the same area last fall, the A3 proved to be a remarkably well-balanced machine. It does indeed understeer at the limit, as one would expect of a nose-heavy hatchback. However, the larger, grippier tires ultimately give it higher limits than the Jetta TDI.

Audi A5 2.0 TFSI quattro: Driving report

Audi A5 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic
Interesting driving report here with the Audi A5 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic from Australia.
Particularly as our first sampling over some tight, winding and quite rough roads in Sydney established this as the best balanced of the A5/S5 family.

Now that may not be saying a lot as the 5s have not drawn rave reviews for their dynamics, but this version’s combination of relatively light 1490kg kerb weight and the traction taming effectiveness of its mechanically torque split all-wheel drive system changes much of that.

There’s little sign of the front-wheel drive A5’s errant steering and a far more compliant ride than the heavy S5 V8 manages. Our experience was good enough on standard suspension to suggest keeping the extra $3600 charged for adaptive dampers in your bank account.

But the star of the show is the engine. A new take on an old favourite, it is a silent assassin. Maximum torque between 1500 and 4200rpm and peak power between 4300rpm and 6000rpm makes for seamless, lag-free performance and a believable claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds.

It is also a compelling advocate for the new generation of direct injection turbo-petrol four-cylinder engines that are being embraced across the automotive world.

Audi Q7 4.2 V8 TDI SE: Driving report

Nice driving report here with the Audi Q7 4.2 V8 TDI SE.
This is the lightly facelifted Audi Q7 4.2 TDI. Apart from a minor visual refresh, the key changes are to the powertrains, all of which are more economical, cleaner and more powerful. The 4.2 TDI benefits more than most engines in the line-up, its output climbing from 322bhp to 335bhp. Combined fuel consumption improves by 3.0mpg to 28.5mpg and emissions drop 32g/km, to 262g/km. All Q7s now get intelligent alternators too, which usually generate their charge when the car’s coasting or braking to save fuel.

Audi will also continue developing its turbocharged and direct injected gas and diesel engines for the foreseeable future as well as reducing the mass of the vehicles they are mounted in. Audi RS3: Spy shots!

Audi RS3
Here are fresh spy shots of the Audi RS3.
Caught testing close to the manufacturer's headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany, with virtually no camouflage, the prototype follows recent Audi form by being disguised as a racer.

However, the distinctive single windscreen wiper, quick-release bonnet pins and adjustable front spoiler won't make it on to the production version. These racy additions are simply Audi's attempt to give spy photographers the slip.

As our exclusive picture shows, the much anticipated newcomer will feature a wider track than the standard A3 and has enlarged wheelarches to accommodate the beefier alloys.

The car is being developed by Audi's Sport division - the team responsible for the barnstorming S4 and RS4 - and is scheduled to make its debut in show-rooms late next year.

Audi RS5: Same engine as RS4, cabrio in the works

The engine will be the same 4.2L unit found under the hood of the RS4 sedan but some tinkering of its electronics and exhaust will see output rise to around 450hp (335kW) and 332lb-ft (450Nm) of torque in the RS5.

The new RS5 should be hitting dealerships in Europe later this year following its debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Audi A5 Sportback, Audi A1, Hybrids: Plans revealed

Audi A5 Sportback
Plans for the Audi A5 Sportback, the Audi A1 and new hybrids have been revealed by Rupert Stadler during the investor's meeting.
The A5 Sportback, originally shown in concept form at the Detroit Auto Show, will be available sometime this year, likely packing the 211-hp, 2.0-liter TFSI, the company's new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and a revised diesel V6 putting out around 240 hp and a boatload of torque. Stadler is convinced the A5 Sportback is a model that will be embraced by consumers looking for something that offers, "the ideal blend of functionality and aesthetics."

Stadler also discussed the new A1 minicar, which will go on sale in 2010, along with a hybrid Q5 CUV and the smaller Q3 crossover arriving in 2011. Audi's detailed product outline also included an announcement that start-stop technology is in the works and will join kinetic energy recovery systems as early as late 2009. At first, the new tech will be fitted to the A3 1.4 TFSI and A4/A5 with the 2.0-liter four fitted with a manual transmission. Audi's goal is to reduce fuel consumption in its range by 20% by 2012, compared to 2007 levels, so it's expected that all of this new tech will filter through to the rest of the Audi line-up in the next three years.
