Gumpert Apollo: Two copies spotted at LA Auto Show

Gumpert Apollo
Two copies of our favorite super sportscar, the Gumpert Apollo, have been spotted at the LA Auto Show.
...what it lacks in the visual department is made up with one of the most capable chassis and motor combinations ever produced. In fact, a pair of Apollos were tucked away in one of the connecting halls at the LA Auto Show, and as far as we know they are the only two examples in the country.

Gumpert Apollo: First car arrives in the US!

Awesome news for all true lovers of supersportcars, the Gumpert Apollo has arrived in the US.
The supercar, which currently sits atop the list of fastest cars around the Top Gear test track, will be shipped to the U.S. and arrive in Arizona where the drivetrain will be assembled and final performance checks done by Evolution Motorsports. Then the cars move on to California where customers actually do the purchasing and pick up at European Touch in Huntington, Beach. The base price for one of ten U.S.-spec Gumpert Apollos coming to the U.S. each year is reportedly $400,000, though each can be infinitely customized and final prices above $700,000 are not uncommon. Just watch out for those speedbumps, as any repair work has to be done back in Arizona by Evolution Motorsports, the only authorized Gumpert repair center in the country.

KTM X-Bow: Clinically insane

KTM X-Bow
Great review here of the KTM X-Bow done by TopGear. Nice read!
First revealed at last year's Geneva motor show, KTM has finally allowed us to see the X-Bow race. By God it was worth the wait.

The fascination is easy to understand. The X-Bow is a stripped-back, essentials-only sports car for the driving purist - the exact approach you'd expect a motorbike manufacturer to take with a four-wheeled project. A stroll around the 'pre-production' road car reveals a top-notch carbon-fibre tub, race-spec triangular wishbone inboard suspension and huge Brembo cross-drilled brakes. Prototype, my arse.

And so here we go again. More meticulous scheduling and press-baiting when, for now, all eyes are on next month, when we finally get a go in the first of the KTM road cars. You've made your point, chaps, we're hooked. Just give us the keys...

Gumpert Apollo Hybrid: More info on the 24h racer

Gumpert Apollo Hybrid
We found more information on the Gumpert Apollo Hybrid which will take part in the 24h race at German Nurburgring.
German sports car maker Gumpert is entering a hybrid race version of its Apollo supercar at the Nurburgring 24-hour race. Instead of using the road-going Apollo’s 650bhp, 4.2-litre V8, engineers have opted for a 3.3-litre V8 and a 100kW electric motor that together produce 630bhp.

The petrol-electric racer also comes with a regenerative braking system that charges its lithium-ion batteries.

Ex Formula 1 driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen and American Le Mans series driver Dirk Muller will be piloting the Apollo hybrid at the 24-hour race, which takes place on 24-25 May.

Gumpert Apollo Hybrid: Caught testing at Nurburgring

Gumpert Apollo Hybrid
You now we are huge fans of Gumpert and its Gumpert Apollo Sport, so it's great to see that a hybrid (!) version has been caught while public testing at Nurburgring.
Well, we knew it'd be out at the Race At Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race, but it looks like it was getting some test time out at the ring a week early. Oh, and did we mention the hybrid Apollo's purportedly rated at 800 HP?

Gumpert Apollo Hybrid: Racing at Nürburgring 24-hour race

Gumpert Apollo Hybrid
As a regular reader you know how much we like the Gumpert Apollo, therefore we are really excited that a Gumpert Apollo Hybrid will participate at the 24h race at the Nürburgring. Awesome!
The Gumpart Apollo is one mean machine with its twin-turbo 4.2-liter Audi V8. But for next month's 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring, Gumpert will be swapping out that powertrain for something a bit more green. Since fuel economy is a key factor in a long race, the Apollo racer will be fitted with hybrid running gear.

The new motor is a 3.3-liter V8 fitted with twin turbos. Combined with a 100kW electric motor, the car has 630 HP readily available. The juice for the electric motor is charged up by regenerative braking technology.

NSU TTS: Up for sale on eBay

NSU TTS
Attention all Audi geeks: a very rare 1967 NSU TTS is up for sale on eBay! Great car, hurry up to get it.
In 1964, NSU introduced the 4-cylinder successor to the 2-cylinder Prinz IV minicar, the Prinz 1000.
The square and upright unibody of the Prinz IV was stretched in all dimensions, but without change in appearance, to provide the basis for the new, larger car.
Positioned in the lower end of the middle class of European economy sedans, the Prinz 1000 featured a roomy cabin for four adults, with a large glass area, and accommodating luggage area.
What separated the car from its competition was the 996cc, 48hp SOHC in-line “four” mounted in the rear, coupled with four-wheel independent suspension. Together, they made for a lively and agile compact car.
Derived from motorcycle racing technology, the lightweight engine was mounted transversely, and featured a five main bearing crankshaft.

Gumpert Apollo S: Driving Report

Gumpert Apollo S
If you are a long-time reader of The German Car Blog you know that we are huge fans of the Gumpert Apollo S. That's why we want to share a nice driving report with you! Please also check the video below.
If you're a driver rather than a poseur, the Apollo's promise of speed has a magnetic beauty of its own. You swing up the Apollo's surprisingly heavy door, then drop yourself into the seat, grabbing the cutout in the roof to help you across the high sill that obstructs the doorway. Just like a racing car, the Apollo has a detachable steering wheel to simplify the whole process.

The seat (or what passes for a seat) is in fact a padded racing shell. It's fixed directly to the carbon-fiber safety cell that surrounds the cockpit, which itself is at the heart of a tubular space frame that forms the Apollo's chassis. Fortunately the pedals and the steering wheel are easily adjusted, so you can get surprisingly comfortable surprisingly quickly. If you're tall or broad, though, you'll realize that the Apollo is a purebred performance car and not some luxury coupe in disguise like a Pagani Zonda or Porsche Carrera GT.

A mix of clean, simple ergonomics and familiar Audi switchgear, the Apollo's cabin trades flamboyance for function. There's a lot to pack into such a compact dashboard, yet everything from the display panel for the Racelogic stability control to the pop-out Pioneer satellite navigation system is well integrated and easy to operate.

NSU Ro80: Soundcheck

NSU Ro80
The NSU Ro80 marked the start of Audi's current success and Audi is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. That's two good reason to check out our soundcheck of the NSU Ro80. Fantastic car, especially once you have seen it live as you can do in the Museum Mobile in Ingolstadt, Germany. At its time the NSU Ro80 was way ahead of its time in terms of engineering and technology.

Gumpert Apollo S: Driven by Tiff Needell

We love everything Gumpert, especially the Gumpert Apollo S. See how Tiff Needell from Fifth Gear is handling it. Great car!
The Gumpert Apollo S is a supercar manufactured by Germany’s Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur and is capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in three seconds flat thanks to its 650hp twin-turbo V8. The scary thing is that there’s an even more powerful ‘Sport’ version with 800hp on tap.

Gumpert Apollo: Now available in UK

Gumpert Apollo
The fantastic Gumpert Apollo is now available in the UK through Racetech UK.
Racetech UK (Burnley, Lancs.) has been appointed the exclusive UK distributor for the awesome German supercar, the Gumpert Apollo -- which will make its UK debut at Brands Hatch on 29 August (2007).

The amazing Apollo boasts a bi-turbo 4.2-litre V8 engine delivering 650bhp and maximum torque of 627lb ft at 4,500rpm and hits 62mph from rest in a staggering 3.0 seconds. Even more incredibly, it accelerates from standstill to 124mph in 8.9 seconds! A very seriously fast machine, the Apollo has a top speed of 224mph.

But for those who want to travel even faster, 700 and 800bhp outputs are available. The awesome 800bhp version even sports a superior power-to-weight ratio than that of the iconic McLaren F1 supercar. Equally impressive, despite its eagerness to serve up maximum performance and ultimate acceleration, the Apollo’s V8 engine is also perfectly suited to day-to-day driving at lower speeds.

The Gumpert Apollo is a performance-oriented, purist super sports car. A perfect synthesis of form and function, with no compromises, its aesthetic shape symbolises power, dynamism and sporting capability. Its silhouette, which has been honed during numerous tests in the wind channel, reflects its above-average performance capability.

Here's the official quote of Roland Gumpert about the Apollo:
"It has always been a dream of mine to have a car that has so much downforce, such aerodynamic efficiency, that you could drive upside down on the roof of a tunnel at high speed. And this car can."

Nothing to add here...

DKW Belcar: 60th anniversary

Time to show you some Auto Union heritage as the DKW Belcar is celebrating its 60th anniversary these days. This is an old commercial from Brazil. Enjoy!
From 1957 to 1967, Vemag produced DKW cars in Brazil. In racing trim, they made awesome two-stroke noise, much like contemporary Saabs. Which, of course, makes sense, since the two-cycle Saab motors were based on a DKW design. Big noise, low speeds.
