Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept: Coming to Gran Turismo game?

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept
A press release for the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept is fueling rumors that the car might show up in the Gran Turismo game.
While the car on the show floor has a blacked-out instrument display, Porsche's interior picture shows a fully operational cockpit. This includes an intriguing sat-nav display on the centre console, which shows a track map and picture of the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife, a track Porsche claims that the new 918 Spyder will be able to lap in less than 7min 30 seconds.

Upon closer inspection, it appears that Porsche has used the track selection screen from Sony's Gran Turismo PSP to illustrate the Nordschleife, which has fuelled rumours online that the firm is set to make its debut in the multi-million selling Gran Turismo franchise, joining already confirmed manufacturers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini and Bugatti.

However, further investigation reveals that the picture of the track next to the map is from Gran Turismo's arch-rival on the xBox, Forza Motorsport, and the front corner of a Ferrari FXX even appears in the shot!

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept: Sexy hybrid madness

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept
Great live photos here of the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept from the Geneva Motor Show where it's already called "car of the show". Who can disagree after watching these photos? Pure eye candy!
The Porsche 918 Spyder Concept is even hotter in person than it is in photos. About the size of a Boxster, it's a little wider and a lot meaner. Underneath all that sharkness you get a 500-horsepower V8 in addition to 218 overall horsepower from the two axle-mounted electric motors. And that will get you to 60 in 3.2 lickety-split seconds as well along with the feelgood factor of 94 miles per hour.

Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, Porsche Cayenne Turbo: Live impressions from Geneva Motor Show

Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, Porsche Cayenne Turbo
Nice live impressions here of the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid and Porsche Cayenne Turbo from the Geneva Motor Show.
The Hybrid is the first from the automaker, but will be just one of five Cayenne trims on offer, and gets you 23-percent better mileage for what is sure to be a hefty premium. Overall system horsepower is 380 horsepower, yet often times you won't even notice it because you'll be "sailing," which is when the drivetrain is decoupled from the engine and happens at speeds up to 97 mph.

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept: Revealed at Geneva Motor Show

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept
Porsche has revealed a concept car with killer looks: the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept. Wow!
Officially it’s only a concept, but there’s no doubt that project XG10 -- or the 918 Spyder concept -- will pave the way for the next Porsche supercar. And what a supercar it is going to be: in addition to the normally aspirated, high-revving, 3.4-liter V-8 good for 500 hp, the striking 918 Spyder has three electric motors onboard that add another 218 hp to the tally. Says Wolfgang Dürheimer, board member in charge of R&D: “This car can lap the Nürburgring faster than the Carrera GT. At the same time, it averages 95 mpg when driven gently. Are we going to build it? We will definitely bring some blank sales contracts to the Geneva show, but it’s too early to talk pricing, production volumes, and timing.

"The strategic aim is to demonstrate that even a supercar can be environmentally friendly. XG10 promises total driving pleasure—and a clear conscience. This is a trendsetting and sustainable premium product that uses the issue of social acceptability to its advantage. And it reflects the legacy of Ferry Porsche, who was convinced that sports cars would never go out of fashion.”

Porsche Panamera: Comparison against Aston Martin Rapide

Porsche Panamera
Interesting comparison here of the Porsche Panamera against the Aston Martin Rapide. Please also see the video below.
In terms of performance figures, though, the Porsche is ahead. The 493bhp Porsche fights the 470bhp Aston, but the Panamera's 516lb ft of torque to the Rapide's 442lb ft is more significant - as is the fact it delivers it from 2250rpm, fewer than half the revs required by its rival.

Porsche Cayenne: More official pictures and video

Porsche Cayenne
Here are more official pictures of the Porsche Cayenne and even a new video. Have a look!
When the Porsche Cayenne is released in Europe it will have a starting price of €46,400. The diesel will retail for €49,900, the S for €60,900, S Hybrid for €65,900, and the Turbo for €96,900. These prices do not include taxes.

Porsche will use a 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 300 PS (221 kW / 296 hp) for the entry level model. The S-badged SUV uses a 4.8-liter V8 engine producing 400 PS (294 kW / 395 hp), while the Cayenne Turbo uses the same engine with an additional twin-turbo unit. With the turbo, it produces 500 PS (368 kW / 493 hp). Both V8 versions use 23% less fuel than the last version, while the V6 uses 20% less.

Porsche Cayenne: Officially revealed!

Porsche Cayenne
Porsche has now officially revealed the new Porsche Cayenne before the Geneva Motor Show. Have a look, also at the video below!
Visually, the new Cayenne gets some obvious Panamera-inspired touches up front (i.e., headlamps), and like past generations, Turbo models get a much more aggressive overall fascia than the lesser models. And even though it looks a bit more petite, this Cayenne is actually 1.9 inches longer than the 2010 model, with 1.6 inches of added wheelbase length.

The big news for the 2011 model year is the introduction of Cayenne S Hybrid–Porsche's first production hybrid vehicle–which uses a parallel full hybrid drive system. The gasoline engine is a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 (sound familiar?), and when mated to a 47-horsepower electric motor, total output for the hybrid is rated at 380-hp and 427 pound-feet of torque, all of which is fully delivered at just 1,000 rpm. Porsche says that the Cayenne S Hybrid is capable of driving up to 40 mph solely using electric assist, and the gasoline engine can be completely switched off at cruising speeds up to 97 mph.

Interesting comparison video here of the Porsche Boxster Spyder against the Tesla Roadster. Great!
Motor Trend's Kim Reynolds and Art St. Antoine took the latest edition of the Boxster, the new Spyder, to Willow Springs recently, along with a Roadster Sport. It makes for very interesting comparison since the Boxster Spyder is the most minimalist version of the Porsche and the Tesla has a slightly more upscale interior than its Lotus Elise progenitor.

Porsche Boxster Spyder: Road test report

Porsche Boxster Spyder
Nice road test report here with the Porsche Boxster Spyder.
The Spyder is suckered to the road and unflinchingly neutral, with none of the bounding and steering washout that haunts all rear-engine 911s. This is the best-handling stock Porsche, period.

The metamorphosis from $58,950 Boxster S to $62,150 Boxster Spyder happens thusly: The power top is gutted, along with about 200 pounds. The roof is a canvas handkerchief that looks like it came off the Victoria’s Secret XXL rack. It hooks to the windscreen header and snaps to the roll hoops.

Where the S model has steel doors and a steel trunklid and top cover, the Spyder has aluminum doors and a single, 22-pound aluminum panel with sexy double-hump fairings. Two long fingers of the top reach to exposed hooks in the panel—the only blemishes on an otherwise perfect bod, which also has a chin splitter, a fixed rump spoiler, black striping, and titanium-hued grille accents.

Stunning photos here of the Porsche Panamera 4S during some arctic ice drifting in Finland. A must see!
Essentially, the Porsche driving school’s Lake Pasasjärvi Ice Force course has only three principle aims: to ensure students don’t freeze to death, don’t use the brake pedal and go as sideways as possible when driving.

You can’t really ask for more hallowed dynamic driving principles than those, surely?

Porsche 911 Convertible: New spy shots!

Porsche 911 Convertible
The next-generation Porsche 911 Convertible has been caught while during winter testing. Have a look!
Being a 911, the stylistic changes won't be revolutionary, but we've gotten word from insiders that active aerodynamics are part of the package (think the Ferrari 458 Italia's pliable nose), along with a new speed-deployable rear spoiler and a handful of openings in the bodywork to tweak airflow and cool off components.

Underneath the new platform, which insiders hint will carry the 991 designation (we don't get the roll-back either), Porsche's boffins are likely to employ a new electro-hydraulic power steering system to further reduce emissions, with the standard 3.6- and 3.8-liter direct-injected flat-sixes carrying over unchanged.

Porsche 911: Ten favorite cars

Porsche 911
Great overview here of the ten favorite Porsche 911 by well-respected car journos. Have a look!
Common to all variations of the breed is an unmistakable sound that didn't change dramatically when the air-cooled boxer was replaced by the water-cooled engine in late 1997; a less-than-ideal weight distribution combined with a high polar moment of inertia; compromised packaging with little room for luggage; and a driving experience dominated by phenomenal grip and traction - while it lasted. Beyond the limit of adhesion, however, 911s of all vintages have frightened us with fickle straight-line stability, a heart-stopping blend of power-on and lift-off oversteer, and the infamously terminal counterswing that punished those who applied too much or too little opposite lock too early or too late with a guaranteed visit to the ditch. Since the low-mounted engine is positioned aft of the rear axle in nearly every 911, this car practically owns the term tail-happy. Even the four-wheel-drive versions channel so little torque to the front wheels that there's never any doubt about which end of the vehicle will come unstuck first. Despite all these peculiarities, the Porsche 911 has become one of the most coveted cult cars in history. Why? Because it is such an involving and intuitive driving machine, and because mastering the monster is so rewarding.

Porsche Panamera 4S: Test drive report

Porsche Panamera 4S
Interesting test drive report here of the Porsche Panamera 4S.
The interior will be familiar to those who have spent time in Porsche sports cars. You sit low in the vehicle, and relationship to the controls is pure 911, as is the look of the major gauges. What won’t be familiar is the richness and opulence conveyed by the elegant modern design and exquisite workmanship. Not to say other Porsches aren’t well put together, but the Panamera leaps into Bentley territory.

Standard equipment in the 4S includes eight-way power and heated seats, navigation system, park assist, rain-sensing wipers, sunroof, bi-xenon headlights with LED running lights, premium audio, power liftgate, and 18-inch wheels.

Porsche Panamera Turbo: Comparison against Maserati Quattroporte S and Jaguar XFR

Porsche Panamera Turbo
Interesting comparison here of the Porsche Panamera Turbo against the Maserati Quattroporte S and the Jaguar XFR.
We’re just a few hours into this group test and already the Panamera Turbo is a rapidly disappearing blob on the horizon, metaphorically speaking. Usually we schedule the potentially damaging performance tests after the drive and photo shoot, but not this time, and we’re genuinely shocked at the figures it has turned in. They’re not just outstanding for a sports saloon; a decade ago they’d have been impressive for a full-blown supercar.

Porsche 911: Hybrid racer to be unveiled for Nurburgring 24 hours

Porsche 911
Porsche is said to unveil a hybrid Porsche 911 racecar for the 24 hours of Nurburgring.
A hybrid Porsche 911 will race at the Nurburgring 24 Hours this year, and could form the basis of a car for a return to Le Mans with an LMP1 prototype.

Reports suggest the Porsche 911 GT3-RSR is being prepared to run as a petrol-electric hybrid, using an F1-style KERS system.

Porsche has refused to comment on the car, but an announcement is expected later this week.

“It is not a question of yes or no, but a question of how and when," said Porsche motorsport boss Hartmut Kristen when asked about its hybrid intentions.

Porsche 928 GT Coupe: New rendering

Porsche 928 GT Coupe
Here's a new rendering of the rumored Porsche 928 GT Coupe. Nice looks!
Fresh off the success of the all new Porsche Panamera, it is rumored that the German sports car builder is working on a larger GT Coupe that would serve as a spiritual successor of the classic 928 along the same lines as the new four door Grand Tourer. We have already heard Porsche’s design chief, Michael Maur, confirmed that he’s working on a new coupe moving away from models like the compact Cayman and Boxster in a direction towards larger sports cars like the 911 and Cayenne with the new 928 fitting in perfectly to compete with high end luxury cars like the Bentley Continental GT. The new car will most likely be built upon the Panamera’s platform with a shorter wheelbase offering more room in the rear as well as additional trunk space compared to the 911.

Interesting comparison here of the Porsche Panamera Turbo against the BMW 760Li and the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG.
The BMW 760Li, the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, and the Porsche Panamera Turbo each enter the saloon with at least 500 horses of firepower tucked away beneath a façade of formality. They look benign enough, but when the dust starts flying, there are few steeds that can match their speed. They may all hail from Germany, but there's something distinctly Wild West about these three sedans. And so we took them to Palm Springs, their natural habitat, for a gunslinging showdown.

Porsche 356: New baby sportscar confirmed

Porsche 356
It has been confirmed that Porsche is working on a new baby sportscar.
Winterkorn said: "The Porsche model range is firmly based on the 911, Boxster, Cayenne and Cayman, and it will stay that way. We are also investigating opportunities for a smaller sports car and a smaller SUV - but I cannot say more at the moment."

When asked how likely the new models were to make production, he responded: "Let’s just say we do not usually waste our effort…"

Dubbed by some insiders as the “new 356”, the mid-engined machine will not, however, be a bargain basement model, despite initial rumours to the contrary. Given the final green light, it would cost from about £33,000 in today’s money.

Porsche 911: Spy photos

Porsche 911
Here are some new spy shots of the next-generation Porsche caught during winter testing. Highlight: the new LED backlights.
The disguise at the rear hides a new wing, which draws on active technology seen in the Panamera. It will extend at high speed to boost downforce without impacting on drag.

The new 911 will be slightly longer and wider than the model it replaces. Porsche has made these changes to ensure the 911 meets ever-evolving crash regulations and also to improve both aerodynamics and dynamics.

Tech features will include an integrated torque vectoring system on four-wheel-drive models and a faster-acting limited-slip differential on rear-drive 911s. These spy pictures also indicate that the 911 will get LED front and rear lights as standard.

Bolting on a pair of turbochargers, 9ff can take a GT3 up to 750, 850 or even 1,000 horsepower. That's Veyron-league power, only without the all-wheel drive, the ground-grabbing track and the aero designed to go with it. Fortunately, 9ff has part of the answer in the form of a corresponding kit, including new bumpers front and rear, side skirts, and new quarter panels, with extra vents all around to keep the intercooler breathing and the air flowing. In full-fat 1,000hp spec, 9ff says its GTurbo will hit 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in a scant 2.9 seconds and, theoretically at least, hit 392 kilometers per hour (243 miles per hour) flat out – which may seem like a heck of a claim until you realize that one of their own modded 1,000hp 911 Turbo hit just that at the Papenburg test track.

Porsche 911 GT3 R: Official pictures released

Porsche 911 GT3 R
Here are the official pictures of the new Porsche 911 GT3 R racing car. What a beast!
The 911 GT3 R is a race-use only Porsche, in line with FIA GT rules, and includes modifications on the GT3 Cup, which in turn was based on the GT3 RS “standard” model. The GT3 R has a flat-six, 4.0-litre engine replacing the 3.8. It has 480 hp and a reduced weight of 1,200 kg.

Porsche 911 Turbo: Pushing the limits

Porsche 911 Turbo
Nice review here of the new Porsche 911 Turbo.
Sure the Carrera GT is faster, but not necessarily quicker. The same goes with the GT2. And while the Porsche purists may now be polishing their pitchforks and Google-mapping the my home, even they would have to admit, at worst, the new 500hp 911 Turbo has managed to blur the lines between sports car and super car.

0-100 in 3.4 seconds. 0-200 in 11.3 seconds. 20.8 kilometers, 73 corners, 290 meter elevation gain, 7:39 seconds. The defense rests, your honor.

But impressive as those figures are, it only tells a fraction of the story. Just as you wouldn’t size up Manny Pacquiao on his stats alone, the Turbo is much more than just a bunch of numbers on a spec sheet – it is how it threads those numbers together that will really take your breath away.

Porsche 911 Turbo: A supercar that's almost easy to justify

Porsche 911 Turbo
Great review here of the Porsche 911 Turbo.
The 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo is an easy car to justify, if you can afford it. Outside of the large wad of six-figure money it would take to own any exotic sports car, the new Turbo has a good counter-argument to pretty much every argument a prospective owner - or cost-conscious significant other - could make against it.

"It's not practical." The 911 Turbo is no minivan, but it has a back seat, and decent-sized trunk.

"You can't use it in the winter." Sure you can. It has standard all-wheel drive, and various traction and stability systems. All it needs are winter tires.

"Doesn't it look just like the last one?" Pretty much, yes - that's just how new 911s are. (Some arguments are better than others, obviously).

Porsche Boxster Spyder: Full test and video

Great review here of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder. Enjoy!
When we finished our First Drive of the 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder, we walked away impressed with what Porsche had accomplished with well-executed minor changes. Now we're walking away from this car nearly convinced that the Boxster Spyder is the most approachable and rewarding car available from Porsche today, the purest Porsche you can buy.

Porsche 911 GT3 R: Coming to Autosport International this weekend

Porsche 911 GT3 R
The new Porsche 911 GT3 R will be shown at the Autosport International this weekend.
Anyway, it's a lightweight (1,200kg), stripped-out special based on FIA GT3 regulations with a 480bhp, 4.0-litre engine.

It's designed with a series of driver aids to help out the amateur racer, including an electronic throttle that blips on the down-change, anti-lock brakes, traction control and a front-wheel-drive hatchback that's less likely to drag a novice backwards into the gravel trap. That last bit's not true.

The GT3 R also features a wider track with pumped up arches and a smooth under-body with rear diffuser. That huge rear wing is adjustable, as is the suspension.

Porsche Cayenne Diesel, Porsche Cayenne Hybrid: Review and outlook

Porsche Cayenne Diesel, Porsche Cayenne Hybrid
Nice report here about the Porsche Cayenne Diesel and Hybrid.
The roads in and around Los Angeles are in the same sorry state as Russian dental health during the Cold War. The Cayenne makes them seem like brand-new veneers. Ride quality is as near to perfect as dammit, while the engine is quiet, smooth and punchy, with immediate throttle response. Even with some serious right foot, there's more of a gruff roar than a clatter. If the American driving style is made up of steady cruising with the occasional prod on the accelerator to pass other cars or get up to freeway speed, then this kind of engine is ideal. It has a loping quality.

As if that weren't enough, the six-speed transmission selects each ratio with an almost imperceptible snick. Incidentally, this is a 2010 model and although the dash design looks pretty much unchanged, the quality of materials feels and looks more expensive.

Porsche Cayenne: Official details revealed

Porsche Cayenne
Porsche has revealed some details of the next-generation Porsche Cayenne.
The big news, however, is Porsche’s decision to add a Cayenne Hybrid to its ranks as part of efforts to give its new four-wheel drive a more environmentally friendly image than its predecessor. Set to form an integral part of the new line-up, it uses an Audi developed 328bhp supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine in combination with a 46bhp electric motor that draws energy from a lithium ion battery mounted within spare wheel well in the floor of the boot. It's an arrangement that will be mirrored in the upcoming Panamera Hybrid. Official Porsche figures put combined reserves at 375bhp – or just 20bhp shy of the Cayenne S.

All second-generation Cayenne models will receive a new eight-speed automatic boasting an automatic stop/start function as well as brake energy regeneration as standard. Porsche claims fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 23 per cent, with three of the five new Cayenne models registering better than 28mpg on the combined European cycle.

Porsche Panamera: 2010 Playboy Car of the Year

Porsche Panamera
Playboy has announced that the Porsche Panamera is their Car of the Year.
There are now so many Car of the Year awards given out that the whole idea of one vehicle being honored above all others has lost its impact. But when the giver of said award is Playboy Magazine, well, the honor means a little more. Why? Because Playboy doesn't pick a winner based on such tangible criteria as horsepower, miles per gallon or MSRP. They don't care so much about the fastest, greenest or most significant car in its segment. They care about cool. Which car is going to get you to that VIP event and make all eyes turn towards you on arrival? For 2010, Playboy says that car is the Porsche Panamera.

Porsche: No hybrid sports cars!

Porsche
Porsche has now officially declined to work on hybrid sports cars, at least not for the 911 and Boxster.
Porsche will not build hybrid versions of the 911 and Boxster, according to CEO Michael Macht.

Although the company has announced that it will make a hybrid version of the new Cayenne, Macht rejected the idea of giving its sports cars a petrol-electric powertrain.

“It’s technically possible but it’s not part of the plan. It also adds weight,” he said. “We want brake regeneraton and stop-start for our sports cars, but not hybrid. They’re not driven in the city, where you get most of the advantages [of a hybrid].”

Porsche Cayenne: Undisguised!

Porsche Cayenne
Here are some fresh spy shots of the next-generation Porsche Cayenne, virtually undisguised!
Autocar says to expect a weight decrease of around 375 Lbs, largely thanks to Porsche ditching pretensions of off-road capability along with the low-range transfer case and and locking rear differential. Inside, expect a fancier interior in the vein of the Porsche Panamera, with a high center console and nicer materials.

Porsche Boxster: Low CO2 model planned

Porsche Boxster
The next-generation Porsche Boxster will cut CO2 with either featuring a turbocharged 3- or 4-cylinder engine.
Porsche’s next Boxster range could include a low-CO2 model using a new four-cylinder engine or even a turbocharged three-cylinder powerplant, a senior company source has confirmed.

Boxster model line director Hans-Jurgen Wohler told Autocar that a version of the firm’s entry-level model with a downsized engine would be one way to reduce Porsche’s fleet emissions, were it required by the time EU emissions limits apply to car makers in 2012.

“A Boxster with a four-cylinder engine, or maybe even a three-cylinder turbo, could produce between 180bhp and 200bhp and emit just 180g/km of CO2,” said Wohler. “Given the Boxster’s history — that it started with a 200bhp, 2.5-litre engine — I think this is possibly something that customers could accept.

Porsche 911 GT3 Hybrid: Debut at 24h of Nuerburgring?

Porsche 911 GT3 Hybrid
Street word has it that Porsche may debut a hybrid version of the Porsche 911 GT3 at the 24h of Nuerburgring endurance race.
With a gas-electric Cayenne on the way next year and a Panamera hybrid in development, the rumor of a race-spec hybrid doesn't seem that far-fetched considering Porsche's proclivity for migrating it's racing knowhow from the track to the road (although it's a bit backwards in this application).
